In my early years of butchering wood I always had the mindset that butt joints were plenty strong and no need for all that fancy joinery.  In the years since that mindset has done a 1800 turn and it pains me to use that joint.  Even small stuff like a tray for parts, half lap, finger joint, something other than a newbie type of joint as my Dad refers to them.

 

Of course this adds time to the project.   :BangingHead:
