Had a talk with Mrs. Boss

I'm no longer "thinking" about selling my floor standing tools and getting a shop-smith.  I got approval from higher authority to move forward with a shop-smith purchase with a budget of $6000.  Heck, she even went out to the shop and took pictures of the tools I'm selling and listed them for sale on that face page thingy.

 

I'm not sure if this is a kindness or a chess move with a motive that has yet to be revealed. 

 

Not sure what kind of wait there is for Mark 7's but there will be one heading to Texas soon enough.

I've been using my 510 for about 15 yrs now and it's paid for itself many times over. It can get to be a pain to do changeovers if you are in a time crunch, but if you're not in a hurry it's not bad at all.

Wow! Congratulations Monty!!!!!! This is super news! I heard some wonderful things about the power and convenience of those Mark7 motors, and oh ya, there is most definitely a motive from the missus!

So I got a question, since I did just what you did a couple years ago, sold my floor machinery and used some of the proceeds to purchase my Shopsmith, what prompted you to move to a Shopsmith, instead of keeping the floor machinery?

We are in Brenham, home of Blue Bell ice cream.  On the map that's halfway between Houston and Austin for those that aren't familiar with the geography here.

The big motivator is lack of space in my little 12x16 shop building.  As things stand today, I can really only use one stationary tool at a time.  Then I have to move it back and get out another one.  As a bonus, I add tools that I don't currently have.  Router table, shaper, and lathe.

Tablesaw, bandsaw, and drill press are sold.  I just about broke even money wise ( I bought them used to start with).  Shopsmith ordered.  Next up, tune up dust collection and install shelving.

I’d be one of the SS operators here. I had decided to get into woodworking, and like you a 15 x 18 foot space isn’t that large. Especially when it still needs to be used for other purposes at times. So a friend had told me about his Shopsmith, he bought it in the late 60’s on one of his visits home from Viet Nam. Still running, he still uses it. So I thought that would be the direction I’d go in. Shopsmith itself has a large forum on their machine. If you aren’t a member it might be worth your while.

You are going to love the MK7. Congratulations ! Having roughly twice the power of the older machines makes it a completely different level of machine. I have currently four SS’s in my shop and use them daily with every project. Two of them are the Power Pros and I love them. There is a lot of set up to the new machine and all of us here will be happy to assist you in getting started.

Thank you!  I'm probably going to need help with it.  With a fine machine like that in the shop, the other tools are going to get jealous.  This is a foray into new territory for me, still more of a dream than a reality.

If you are planning on doing any turning put the universal tool rest on your list. It makes a great lathe out of the SS.

I got a call from ShopSmith this morning.  Unit ships 04/04/21.    Didn't take as long as I thought it would.

The most extraordinary thing happened.  I was in the parlor last evening watching a YT video of a guy turning a bowl.  Mrs. Boss looked over at me and said, "I want to make a bowl.  Does the Shopsmith have a lathe"?  Yes it comes with one says I.  The "I want" line on her forehead told me all I really need to know...this is serious. 

 

After a lengthy discussion about flying sawdust, shop safety, and the purchase of specialty tools she remains undeterred.  I'm utterly flabbergasted.  Willingness to cross the shop threshold, approval to purchase tools, and getting sawdust in her hair...I must be in a episode of the Twilight Zone.  Imagine if you will....
