March 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Another 3 hour Laundry Detail and Shoptime day, today....Not without a few "issues" this time around... Filler Strip glue up was done, clamps removed... Then I can get the parts for the drawer cut to size, and finish the dovetails Wanted to get the other front corner done.. More pins laid out... Sawn, and Knife walls made, before any chopping gets done.. Getting close... Then, use these to lay out the tails, and saw those.. Then chop the waste out...then a dry fit, again.. I just might get the hang of these, someday? Issues began...while in the midst of grooving the sides for a bottom panel...and AFTER the dado had been made.. This one was fine...the other side had that dado on the OUTSIDE instead of the inside....had to stop, make a replacement side from scratch,Then, make sure the dado was on the correct side...The front was easy to do...no dados, just a groove thing... Dry fit the sides and front...and the panel for the bottom.. Cut the back of the drawer for length...width was a different matter.. One edge then the other, were jointed down until the back fit the way it was supposed to...At which point, wet brush, bottle of glue, and a few clamps.. Good thing the next job does not need to be on the bench....Marked out some curves, bandsaw to cut...and burn... With a brand new blade, no less...so...this can sit around, while the glue in the drawer cures.. As I need the bench back....clean up the drawer, add handles to it....add hinges to the cleaned up lid...then see about a finish? Stay tuned..
March 15, 20215 yr Author No Laundry to do on Sunday....only spent 2 hours in the shop.. Drawer came out of the clamps. Needed a better sander to clean the corners up a bit.. Needed the table squared up to the platten, first..then see how the drawer fits.. Close enough? didn't want to slide it all the way....sanding and filling, and sanding some more...then lay out for 2 knobs... Drill 2 holes...and glue in the handles.. NOW I can slide the drawer all the way in....except..it didn't want to? Seems the bottom of the drawer was a bit too...long? We Have Ways A Junior Jack took it down a bit. which left adding hinges to the lid.. Thought about brass ones...these were just too big. Hobby Lobby hinges were a bit better...needed a special pilot hole drill bit... Cut the head off a nail..chuck into the drill....even then, I needed to wax the threads of the screws ( broke the first one, move towards the center to cover it up..) Then sand everything down...starting with 100 grit, and finish up with 220 grit...for now... Stain was brushed on...get one side stained, then wipe it down....inside and out.. Inside...including the drawer...and.. Outside...was trying to get the grain patterns to wrap around the box...came close? Stripe in the lid is a strip of white oak.... Letting this mess dry a day or two....then see about some varnish..... Stay tuned
