using up the Ash leftovers.....resaw didn't quite go smoothly....issues with a pushstick getting nicked by the tablesaw blade....hand is about healed up...

Goal is a "Desktop Organizer"  something like Paul Sellers made a while back....

Except there will be a pair of drawers at the bottom.   Split right in the center by a divider....( don't have a large enough scrap for ONE drawer front..)

 

Not sure about the bottom details, yet..

May do a molding around the outside, instead of just a solid piece of Ash....We'll see..

 

Sorted through a stash of slats, 1/2" thick by 1-1/2" wide...

This being the"Pick of the Litter"?  Cut these down to all the same length...cutting the worst spots off...

Not the greatest looking mob, is it?  Edges needed jointed...

Gave this a workout...until...

(Underside of Lid)  managed to somehow glue and clamp a panel....and then let it sit a day..or three..

Going to be fun getting that one cleaned up..

 

Next day...after sharpening and tuning up the Millers Falls No. 14 Jack plane, AND a little 3/4" chisel..

had a few panels to do...a back panel was first....needed flattened and jointed..

Burn marks are a bit rough to remove..

Then the jointer ( same plane..)

Then check for any gaps....

Looks good from here, no light poking through...glue, cauls and clamps...

And set the panel for the back of the box aside....over with the lid, for now. 

Sides...had these 4 pieces..

With some places thicker than others..and them dang burn marks...we have ways.

Burn marks?  What burn marks?   one edge was a bit thicker than the other...was

 

Jointed the edges, until they would fit together, and the grain would line up...

Waiting on glue clamps and cauls....maybe later today, eh?

And..it is looking even better today.....there was an issue with cranking a few clamps down tight...had to change to being a Lefty for a day...

...Had to dig out the left handed plane.  

Laundry Detail this afternoon...means the area between my shoulder blades is now sore....hands is doing better, though...clamps came off the lid panel..

The "Good side" needed to be planed flat....then smoothed...

which left the underside...

Hmmm, this MIGHT take a while

Beltsander, and a couple planes....

We have ways...

Other panel came out of the clamps..

Slowly....wasn't too bad, actually...

Was even able to use a smoother plane..

back was getting crampy...decided to just glue up two panels..

Alrighty.....A wee bit of work, today....without doing any Laundry....

Clamps needed to come off...and then check to see how these match up...

And...of course they didn't....we have ways...

Then check the ends for square..

usual luck....trim both ends square, for now....check to see how things line up with the panel for the back..

This time, it is the back panel that is too wide....plane the "extra" off...checked with a straight edge..

Close enough?   Ok, lid needed trimmed for square, and for length (12")

Needed this done...so I could then measure the back and sides for length...and trim that...

As I want a 3/8" overhang all the way around..

Sides did need a bit of clean up..

Ya think?

One result of going with the 12" length of the lid, parts can be a bit shorter....short enough to allow asingle drawer..

T goes across the front, above the drawer.  DF is a drawer front....and, of course both needed cleaned up, and jointed.  They were too wide, so both needed jointed for width, so they would match the height of the rest of the sides...

The "Before"....handsome, ain't they....

Might be a decent drawer front? maybe...

And the top of the front...planes today?

Only use these two....Left one is a Millers Falls No. 11, Junior Jack (Stanley 5-1/4 size) and the right one is a Millers Falls No.9....Same size as a Stanley No. 4

 

Got everything planed smooth and straight....I can put the planes away, for now...

Close those doors.  Next tools needed will be joinery stuff.....marking gauges, squares, saws, chisels...that sort of thing....Through Dovetail...or...Finger/box joints?     Did Dovetails the last time on one of these.....wasn't real happy with them.   We'll see.

 

Maybe the back will allow a little more time IN the shop, tomorrow....don't want to work on a Monday

Had a late night....nap from 2000hrs until 0010Hrs....then could not get back to sleep...so..laid out the parts for this box...to see how the grain will align..might get lucky...

That one in the back..IS the back....knobs are sitting on the drawer's front. Trying to wrap the grain around..

Seems to line up well enough.....Laid out the toys I'll need..

I think I'll be doing through dovetails, again...

Could be....note the handle on the SW bevel gauge..

0500 Hrs start up, this morning....

Layout work.

Marked as Front, Back, Top, Bottom, and Inside...then a baseline..

Layout tools..

Layout lines to cut..

Drop the panel down in the vise, get the shop stool ready...

Run a saw for a bit..

Set up a chopping block....

Outside face first, chop halfway down...flip over..

Pins are done...use them to mark out the tails....make a bunch of bandsaw cuts..INSIDE the waste lines

Chop halfway down, and then flip over..

Then try a dry fit..

Close enough...repeat for the other end of the back panel...dry fit..

Back 2 corners are done...for now...leaves 2 more to do...

This is the top of the box...These corners will get dovetailed....below this is the drawer.  Front top needs a rebate, to help hold the floor of the upper compartment..

Ok...reset the Stanley 45, using the front piece...

As both sides and the back need a groove...need a jig set up, too..

groove is about dead center...time to get "Groovy"

I did find out...that the #12 cutter in the #45 plane...supposed to be 1/4"?    Does NOT match the 1/4" cutter from Veritas

Used a piece of scrap plywood to test fit things..

Well, at least these 3 all line up...Had to cut a different corner,,

Yep, that's all the cuts needed here....trying for this sort of corner..

Was starting to get grumpy and tired....test fit this again.

I think I'll save that last corner...for tomorrow...need to mill a groove for the bottom panel to set in....and the drawer can use to slide on.  Need to cut 2 plywood "floors"...

Last corner is done involved the last of the pins..

To lay out and cut the last of the tails..

then one more dry fit..

Then mark up two plywood panels and dry fit those..

One for the bottom of the box..and..

Oversized board will get made into the front of the drawer....lid is a tad too big, too..

need to trim it down a bit.....debate was whether to work of building a drawer....or just go ahead and glue up the case....hmmm

This seemed the lesser of the two evils....

let this sit a day....then clean it up, and THEN build a drawer...once I can find the top of my bench...again..

0900 this morning, started in by taking the Laundry to the basement...then taking all them clamps off the case..

Worked on cleaning up the glue joints...

Trying to square up the case a bit...

And filling any holes...Then started on getting a filler strip for across the bottom of the drawer opening...

needed this done to each end, then jigged up...

So the Stanley 45 can do..

This.....took 2 different settings, too....this is where the plywood floor will sit...dry fit..

had to mark how much needed to be removed, bandsawn off,,the underside ?

Wraps under the plywood..Lots of clamps needed..

Had to pull the sides of the case in a bit, as they had flaired out

next..cross cut the drawer front for length..

Then rip for width..

Test for fit...

Then, flatten it a bit...

Also worked on 2 sides and a back..

And they needed cross cut, ripped and planed flat...sides needed jointed for width..

Then checked (again) for fit...

Should work...as to how square does that old Mitre Box cut?

I think I can live with that...back is trimmed for length and width...

Then pins were laid out..

Then sawn..

Waste chopped out, use the pins to lay out the tails...saw and chop those...and a rough dry fit..

Very rough...Laundry was dry, Back was hurting, been down here 3 hours...

Set this in here, and call it "Quitting  Time!"

Almost missed Lunch

Haul the Laundry back upstairs...and close up shop.
