Good Monday morning!

Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks!

 

I finally got in the ol shop for a few hours Saturday and an hour today, we are making a 24" wide by 72" tall hall cabinet to store mama's craft supplies and books in. Made from poplar, it will have adjustable shelves and shaker style doors, mama's going to milk paint it and I'll finish the interior with shellac. There will be a vertical board back to it, boards of various widths and the long edges chamfered. Using my Shopsmith still, and enjoying the experience with it still!

Finish up restoring a laptop and hoping the NOCTI rewrites are ok. Then maybe back into the shop for another cherry bowl.

Funny thing about the download. I have used a bit of that steel tubing with corners which came from drugstore glass displays. It is handy stuff and when new it is very hard to get it apart.

 

Got the top finished on the Coffee Bar and had to show her what handles I had and what I have made in wood. She asked for shells but backed off. I had not even considered shells and then bang the idea hit me. Make a small shallow bowl and carve the shells on the outside. Look at the shell on this chest and visualize it as a bowl.

Will continue on removing cracked mortar from the joints and proceed with pointing and tucking.  Have the back of the house almost completed.  Hope to finish it up on Monday.  Then will move to one end.  

 

Also, for rest, will be making a rolling pin for an old schoolmate.  A couple of pieces of pear and 3/4" inch of cherry.  I hope it works as I have never turned laminated woods before.

In between errands this week (wife has 2 Dr. appts, and the dog has one at the groomer, and we both get our second vaccine shots Friday) I hope to get my DC fixed and keep practicing turning table legs. At the moment this turning exercise if more drudgery than fun. Also, I downloaded the Inkscape drawing program that Steve Krumy uses for his CNC...I may get a chance to screw around with it.

Fred and/or @Steve Krumanaker, Can you provide a link to that Inkscape drawing program? I have Inkscape. Is this a separate add on?

 

Monday here will entail taking delivery of and spreading 10 ton of rock under a newly installed 35'X30'X10' awning we attached to one side of the shop. Previous owners left it in a bundle just laying alongside the shop building. A couple friends and I erected it over a couple weekends. For now, after spreading the rock, it will provide temporary covered storage for Shop equipment so that I can complete the shop insulation and wiring.

48* and drizzling at at the moment, but we are supposed to break 60* later today!  Bring it on!  Looks like we may even see 70* on a couple days.  I will be enjoying this break in the weather to the fullest. 

I have a lot of misc. chores to do - taking the cars out for an afternoon drive is on that list.  I need to move them out of the garage so that I can do some clean out in there, and if I start them to move them I ought to drive them to get them all warmed up and make sure everything is a-ok with them

Fair warning, there is a steep learning curve. It has capabilities that I haven't scratched the surface on. Highly recommend watching tutorial videos to help you get started. My favorite author/teacher is logos by Nick on youtube, he is a master at using it and also happens to be a good teacher.

He also offers a "master class" that can purchased. It's ridiculously cheap at only $17.00, some of the best money I've spent.  You may also want to consider downloading Gimp. The two programs really compliment each other.

Jacob my helper came over to finish the stir stick project. Told me he couldn't leave me hanging on it. Plus he wanted to see the finished product.

 

Now I have a place to store and access stir sticks. Minor detail but it's the little details that really make things work.

 

Next is curtains. Bought 2 HF moving blankets.  Added grommets. Made couple holders and tucked them in nice and beat.  Now to stain and poly the holders and done.

Finish work completed on brackets for curtain rods.  Installation now completed.  

 

Doubled up for maximum winter protection. Two end windows get insert cabinets / a fan, upcoming projects.

 

 

Let down to cover the walls when doing finishing.  Also hides my good plywood stash for same reason.

 

 

 

Pulled into corner to get light into room.

finished turning a teak bowl this morning, and then started turning a maple bowl.  maple was pretty wet, so i'm going to let it sit for a few weeks on the lathe, let it dry out a bit, and then finish turning it.  gift for someone in May.  the teak is also a gift for another.

Wet wood  quickly  makes chucks rusty.

Only if you leave it on chuck. Never had a problem except one time I left a bowl on chuck. nasty
