December 2, 20205 yr Popular Post Our woodturning club does demos and the coffee drinkers always want a pot ready and not to fire up the big meeting pot. I found a small Mr. Coffee at a thrift store for 5 and decided it needed a box for storage. Have all these ply cutoffs from the house next door so materials are free. I have never been too good with 45 degree joints but since this will be painted not a real problem. Finally found a use for this Gripperrr I got from estate sale and I can say i was surprised at how well it performed. Test fit looked great Looks like a clamp tree and no that is not all the parallel clamps I have . Wish I had more in the 18 inch range. This is what the pot looks like. I got the box out of clamps yesterday and rounded the corners and filled any cracks left. Will get pics today and cut the top off.
December 2, 20205 yr Mitered corners don't make a box simple. Looks good. I'm mad at Mr. Coffee. I always get the simple maker so it doesn't turn itself off. On my latest one the lid is hinged on the left side instead of on the rear where they've always been. Being left handed I find it hard to pour the water in. Gotta always ruin a good thing.

Amazes me something simple they just had to make complicated. Let me make a few decisions huh? How about turn on and frickin stay on till I say otherwise. When I empty the pot, whoa let me turn it off all by myself.... I feel ya on the being left handed, the newest one is same way. Box looks good @Gerald, but like @HandyDan mentioned miter joints ain't simple..... That being said let us summon @steven newman because you didn't use dovetails.......
December 3, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok so yesterday my Long Ranger remote went out. Like what the after only about 25 years. So this is on my DC . Decided I did not need a remote as most of the time now I turn it on and get on the lathe. So today got a 220 switch , box and wire. Got home and looked in the wire drawer and sure enough got plenty 12G 3 conductor plus ground. Oh well H=Got that in and time for the box. This is after rounding over and filling. Now for full cut thru sides and almost thru the ends. After sanding the edgesis ready to glue in the lip to center the lid. Yes I have several of these clamps too , of many brands. No hinge on this one , using hasps and hoping two will do. Maybe get to paint tomorrow, probably green. Ok still use a lot of OD.

December 3, 20205 yr Popular Post Glad you found the Grrripper worked well Gerard. I bought one when I got my table saw. Love it, use it every time just for peace of mind even when I think I could get away without it. Box looks good, I'm sure the group will appreciate your efforts!

December 3, 20205 yr Popular Post Looking good. My dust collector is on a similar switch, right on the wall between the table saw and miter saw stand.
December 3, 20205 yr Popular Post Good job on that complex box. Glad you got your dust collector switch repaired and back in operation. I like Gunny's idea. Some stain and varnish. Easy peasy.

December 4, 20205 yr Author Popular Post No pic of final because it is not finished. Paint scheme did change. I thought I have enough hunter green but no so the top will be green and the bottom silver. Maybe tomorrow.
December 4, 20205 yr Gerald I noticed in the beginning, the box appeared to have mitered edges on the open face. Squinting at it it harder, I think that might have been a trick of the photo and my brain. But I'm still not 100% sure, can you confirm please? And if so, can I ask why you mitered the ends? Just trying to understand if there's a technique I haven't seen before and why it might be used. Edited December 4, 20205 yr by 1fizgig

I have a lot of scraps from a house constructed next door and seemed like a good use for 18 x 18 scrape. Ordinarily I would do a box like this with 1/4 ply inset in top and bottom and finger joint for sides. If it was shop use ; butt joint and screws.
December 5, 20205 yr Thank you, I understand and that makes sense. I had never considered that before! New thing learned. Thanks for sharing that wisdom.
