Gerald,

Watch the first video of Steve's I linked. Believe it or not he made them.

That is a bit labor intense. Looking for premade birds

The craft/hobby stores have them.  Also search tiny craft birds online.

@Steve Krumanaker,

:ChinScratch:Is that a late 30's Delta 930 11" I spy in the background of your segmented plywood globe video?

Larry, it is. That lathe was my father's, I kind of remember he bought it in the 50's but other than that not sure just when. I know it seemed old even then. I didn't acquire it until probably 8 or 9 years ago. I had never had an interest in turning because I thought you had to be an "artist" to turn. I didn't realize turning is more about technique than anything else. When I got the lathe I decided to try and turn a bowl and bought a cheap four jaw chuck. Had about a dozen catches, ripped the blank out of the chuck 2 or 3 times and was immediately hooked. It wasn't long before I wanted something larger, heavier, and more powerful. Turn on a Powermatic 4224 now.  It's funny, I've got this giant lathe and most of what I turn now I could do the Delta. LOL

@Steve Krumanaker

If you compare the badge on the Delta to this topic it will tell you what year it is.

I couldn't get a clear view in the video of the badge.

As you can probably tell by my avatar I'm an "Old" Delta fan. :D

I've got a 1941 Delta Milwaukee Badged 930. (First year for the cast iron bed version)

Gerald, you may be surprised but the little birds are very quick to do. If you break it down, it's basically two water drop shapes. A short squat one like when the drop first forms, and an elongated one like just before it drips. I can make the two pieces in just a few minutes. Besides that, ANYONE can walk into Michael's and buy a little bird made in China, only a wood turner can create one that's unique.

Thanks Larry, I will definitely look into that. Just an FYI, if any of your contacts would like and old iron Delta lathe I would give them a deal. I really need to make some room in the shop. I've got lots of accessories for it.

Thanks that narrowed the search
