September 6, 20205 yr Popular Post Started today on a cherry burl my son gave me for Christmas in 2017. this is what it looked like after after cutting it open on bandsaw. Mounted between centers and tried to get a place to do mortise. No luck so went with a glue block. Used medium CA to attach this. finally got the bottom shaped and on to sanding which went well. Now on to hollowing and that that was rough. This is is what I started with. After breaking the glue bond and then breaking the sacrificial faceplate I tool another approach. Used myArbortech ball carver to get down to solid wood. Drilled to ease the hollowing and finished for the day at what you see.
September 6, 20205 yr Gonna be a beautiful piece! I've been watching some of Carl Jacobson's live demonstrations. He swears by "hot glue" for mounting his pieces. I've never trusted the stuff that far. His recommendations are for using an "industrial" glue gun- not the kind that you get from Hobby Lobby. He said the smaller guns don't get hot enough. Maybe you could have used a paper joint?
September 6, 20205 yr Author Lyle Jamieson likes to use thick CA but I only have medium and that did work. I really think the surface was not smooth enough with the inclusions that are there. Have never had this much trouble with regular wood so I knew the CA would work , just a matter of making the beginng surface I am turning better smoothed out. Oh by the way this thing is hard. There are industrial strength hot glues also. Edited September 6, 20205 yr by Gerald
September 7, 20205 yr Good looking burl Gerald. They can get nasty when turning though and are always good for A few tense moments. Kind of like turning a wood hand grenade ! The end justifies the means though. Can’t wait to see the results! Paul
