Hey everyone, My name is Kevin, I was born in Indiana but was raised and live in Alabama.  I did 14 years in the Navy then was medically discharged.  I'm a machinist by trade which led me to wood turning.  I have a small shop and some old machines that barely run but they get the job done for now. I hope to take this vast portal of knowledge and make it a side hustle/hobby.  I am novice, with only a few projects under my belt. My shop is an old barn for now but it works,  I have a scroll saw and small band saw hand sanders and drills and such. I have an old, old, did I say Old? central Machinery 12x40 lathe.  When I figure out how up load some photos I will.  I want to make bowls, ornaments, pens, and possible small wood with resin tables.

Welcome aboard. I see a new lathe in your future. When you start and like what you do then you will want to do more and different. We have lots of fun in the turning forum.

Welcome to TPW Kevin.

Nothing wrong with old machines, my lathe dates from 1941.

Most of my machines are older than that.

Welcome aboard Kevin. First, thank you for your service. You won't find a friendlier group than what we have here. Lots of talented woodworkers, all here to help.

Welcome aboard, Kevin.  And, thank you for serving our country.  I am a Navy dude from 1968 to 1972.  You may look around for an old Shopsmith.  If you find the 10 ER models, they make pretty good lathes.  That is a beautiful bowl.  Looking forward to what else you do.

Kevin looks pretty good . Now we need to work on your final finish cut and the sanding. The better the final cut the easier the sanding job gets. Are you using carbide or bowl gouge? Also you might want to start posting in the turning forum to keep it all together.

You can't but you can ask one of the admin (the really high paid) guys to move it.

@Kevin the turner why not just post the pictures in turning and then I can offer you some suggestions on style and technique, But note it may be rough in some aspects.
