I’m fairly pleased with this turn out.  I did not use the dovetail jaws on this one just the face plate.  I guess you could say it’s okay for a beginner candle stick holder we shall see.  I’ve still got to put a coat of wax on it I just finished with the boiled linseed oil how ever I think the wax will just add more too it. I used nothing but carbide tipped tools.  I was going for the more rugged beat up kind of look and got it.  So once I get this thing cut off from the base I guess I could call it a successful turn.

I just hope I can get a flat bottom when I chop it off not too keen on cutting it off using one of the chisels.  Don't need anything going flying.

It wouldn't go flyin across the room now would it using the parting tool lol? I'll have to give that a try after the wax is dry on it.

Bring the tail stock up against the free end then part it almost the whole way through. I usually leave about 1/8” to 1/4”  holding the pieces together. Then use a saw to complete the separation. The lathe is turned OFF when using the saw.

That should work.  I'll give that a go I just have to wait for everything to dry so more than likely by tomorrow afternoon I'll be able to post a finish shot of everything.  If it's a successful parting LOL.

THIS IS IMPORTANT, DON'T BECOME A STATISTIC.

Just a friendly reminder for anyone that passes through.

Worked like a dream easy peasy.  And yea I cut the thing off with the lathe spinning LOL made it easier (JK).  But the cut off tool worked like a breeze and sawing was easy at about an 8th of an inch.  Once the bottom coat of linseed oil is done drying I'll post a shot of the finished work in this thread.  I'm quite impressed it even sits flat.  I think I am going to be ordering the extension for that lathe this week or next week.

Here’s the photos I could have done better with the hollow out but should hold a candle okay.

I'm hoping to do better on my next turn I'll probably start cutting up pieces tomorrow but I'm going to have to try and get them a bit more round and cut pieces out on the band saw, if I don't the lathe is just too wobbly and dangerous to even try and put a chisel to a block of wood I'm going to try a bit longer.  Once I get a better hang of things I'll try the bowls I've gotta figure out the dovetail jaws eventually.  Right now I'm a bit iffy on them.  But I'm sure they will become a must for bowls unless I can do bowls some other way.

HEre's a video showing how to turn a bowl withou using a chuck

I will definately give that a watch.  I want to be more comfortable using the dove tail jaws but I need to start being able to do things with the face plate as well and be comfortable with it.  Problem I'm facing is removing the tail stock lol it doesn't want to just slide off the bench easy.  So I haven't quite figured out how to fully take it off once I get that worked out or until the point I get the bench extension I'll be golden I think.

Check under the lathe ways. My lathe has a removable stud that keeps the tail stock from accidentally being slid too far. Unscrewing the stud permits the tail stock to be removed

Yea I think mine does as well I noticed the bolt underneath it while I was out there earlier I just gotta figure out how to get that out LOL.  Its a tight fit.

Andrew if i read right on your parting cut you parted all the way thru. This sometimes works clean but it is usually better to do this the Lew is referring to. It sometimes happens that the final 1/32 will pull fiber out of the completed turning leaving as unwanted hole.

Now I want to give you some homework. You next need to learn Beads and Coves and this is a good video on that,

If I recall correctly in HS that was my favorite thing to do was make beads.  It seems fairly simple to do.

Tell us what your lathe is again?  Do you have it bolted to a bench?  Are you starting off at the slowest speed?

Its the Wen 12x18 inch variable speed bench top lathe its not currently bolted down at the moment due to the fact its a bench top but I'll be figuring out some feet for it using angle iron once I order the extension for it.  I don't want to lock it down in place and not be able to hollow something out easily I may just lock it down anyway but we shall see.
