120V Variable Speed

 I don't think this type of controller will work for your motor.   I am not a expert on this but for reasons as Larry said the speed the centrifugal switch cuts out is a major concern along with motor cooling.   Something like a VF would be better for control on this type of motor but the centrifugal switch is still a problem.    Roly

Thanks Roly.  I thought maybe a fan motor was different with having to overcome the resistance of the fan on start up.  I didn't think they had a centrifugal switch.

I did notice this motor could be wired to turn either direction.  With the proper switch I will have a reversing motor on hand.

Is there a tag on the motor?

Yes and I took pictures but an update to Windows 10 must have screwed up how I put the pictures on the computer from my Sony camera.  I ran the battery out trying and it is charging.  I may have to uninstall and reinstall the camera.

I had to switch to using a card reader for my old Kodak, W10 doesn't like my camera at all.

Should have switched to the card reader long ago.

Camera batteries last much longer, and it only cost about $10.00.

Finally conquered my camera problem.  Still have to jump through hoops to get the pictures here but it is better than the Sony cure. Hope it works for awhile and they don't screw it up all together.  Their new program may be nice but I would need classes on how to use it.  If anyone wants to know how I'm doing it I can explain further.  Here is the tag.

@HandyDan,

Dan,

Do yourself a favor, and get a card reader. If your Sony's doing like my Kodak did.

I could only access one photo at a time from the camera, and then have to unplug and then plug it in again.

As to your motor, it is a split phase motor.

If you used a drum switch with it you could do FWD/REV with the switch.

I have done this with other motors.  Can I use the Dayton speed control on it.

Dan,

Speed controls are not recommended with a split phase motor due to the centrifugal switch.

These motors have to develop a speed that will disengage the switch, running them slower will keep the start circuit engaged resulting in probable burn out of the start circuit windings.

If you want FWD/REV and electronic speed control your best bet would be a capacitor start motor.

They get reversed basically the same way as a split phase motor.

If you don't need/want FWD/REV you could also use a repulsion induction motor.

Reversing these motors requires moving the brush assembly in relation to the armature.

@HandyDan,

As a side note, if you run across an exercise treadle machine you get the motor, and speed controller in a package deal. I've seen them for as low as $35.00 at rummage sales.

Just trying to use up some of those things I saved figuring I would use them some day.

I know that feeling, and have more than once gotten rid of something only to later ask myself "Now why did I do that?" :WonderScratch:

Sometimes you can get paid for showing up and hauling the clothesline, er I mean treadmill away. :)

I have a 90V DC motor controller so I guess I should just buy a 90V DC motor and be done with it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I will second Larry Buskirks suggestion ----Many years ago I purchased a treadmill motor and controller from salvage business in Lincoln, Nebraska-----I mounted this unit on my old Delta drill press and have enjoyed variable speed capability ever since.
