Making a Simple Carving Mallet

Haven't had a chance to view the entire video, but it's a neat take on a carving mallet.

Now that's pretty cool!

I have alot of axle nuts, 32mm to 36 mm would work good for this application.

:ChinScratch:...I've got some big square nuts that would give a bigger hammer face.

Is there a rule that says mallets have to be used if you are a carver? I dug through Dads tool boxes when I was a kid and found a small ball peen hammer that worked perfect and today I still use ball peen hammers when I use a chisel on wood..I guess shame on me?

I guess that's why I have journey under my name for I am still looking for it!

Like John said whatever works.  But if you used this mallet you would never worry about orientation of the head like a ballpean hammer.  I bet you try it you would be surprised.  I was.  Never used a wooden mallet. Finally made one. Wow so much easier.

I think the weighted end is beneficial as the inertia would create forces without as much muscle needed.

I've always used round headed mallets like the ones @steven newman uses. Mine aren't weighted but then I really don't do much carving- mostly use them for dovetails and seating drive spurs.

Anybody know what kind of vice the guy is using?  Would like one like that.

When he was preparing the nut at the beginning he used an old Stanley vise like this one.  Notice it clamps to the table.

The vise he uses at the end of the video also clamps to the table.  It is a clamp on dual jaw swivel table vise similar to this one.

It can still be purchased for what seems like a reasonable price at the link below.  Just not sure what brand or quality it is.

This one you'd probably would do best to hit on one of the flats of the nut.

My luck I would hit on an edge, slip and slice a finger open. Murphy does me like that.:throbbinghead:

That's a heck of a lot more reasonable than the one I found!

The one you found deserves the price.  It is bigger and a well known brand name.

Rumor is, that’s how you motivated yourself for that world record mallet toss. LOLOL

I have a PanaVise hobby vise.  Picked it up at an estate sale for $8.00.  It has two vise heads but doesn't do a 360°.  I have these pieces.

There is many accessories for it.
