Veteran in Need of a Cane

Featured Replies

Dear folks, is there anyone here who is masterful at making walking canes?

We have a disabled veteran who has contacted us, and needs a hand up. Our community is willing to pay you for your work. We will be gifting this walking assistant to our veteran.

No disrespect is intended to our folks here, but I would like only a woodworker who builds canes and is masterful at your work, we can't risk a "one off" product with mistakes or a bad design style. Our disabled veterans deserve only the best.

Please drop me a line here if you are interested in helping us with this project. We'll be asking for images of your prior work in canes, thank you!

Hi John

Thanks for getting back to me, I understand the time it took, it seems that the whole world has went crazy, (good time to be right with our Lord).

So, you don't have no reason to apologize, I understand.

Yes, is the answer to the question, am I still in need.

I've been watching on YouTube videos of "fractal burn" canes & walking sticks. I love them, just so you know if you are gonna help, I need a hook style cane that would also be aggressive in self defense, my area is over run with (Meth heads & Heroin users). To go to the store or an appointment is nerve racking because I know they see me as an easy target, I'm not but one slap with an aluminum cane & it's bent, I need something that could inflict a mind changing moment, (get my drift). A hook style cane is a medically leagle carry device for me & isn't considered a weapon but, a walking stick is considered a blunt force instrument (weapon).

I truly hope this isn't asking to much, I promise any assistance would be greatly appreciated & cared for, & bragged about.

Thank you

Tim

Here is a facebook link to a man in Texas.  His phone number and other contact information is there.  This is only as a backup in the unlikely event there is no one here who feels comfortable with the project.  And, I will volunteer to cover the shipping costs if that will help.  Just want to help my fellow man.

Our club did these several years ago and the woodcarvers club made the heads and finished them.

We do have a carver on the forums. Forgotten his new tag, I think he used to go by sixty vet. Maybe someone has a better memory than I do. He posted a beautiful walking cane some time ago that was given to his minister.

Would that be irishwoodcarver? He was at the house a for our small gathering and brought 2 carved staffs he did...they were quite impressive.

I have made a couple.  Expert I am not.  Would be willing to make another or donate a few $$$$ to the cause.  The two I made were for friends and I didn't worry about liability as they were a gift.  But liability is certainly a concern.

You're right Fred ! I can make the connection now.

Sheeesh!  I forgot to post the link.   Here it is.

We have a local craftsman, but I have not found him.  He was on the local news and I have some really nice straight sasafras.  I'll keep looking.  Thanks for this thread..

Gents, I am in contact with Brazo's Walking Sticks, they create canes for veterans, I'll let ya'll know what we come up with, thanks for your interest once again!

@John Morris,

Didn't we have a woman member a few years ago that asked for help getting a grant to start a business doing this very thing?

She needed us to cast a vote on facebook.

We did, that was a long time ago. She came from Lumberjocks I believe.

I tried to contact Meilie at several of her social outlets. Never got a response.

I am like Handy Dan, I have made some canes before. Quite fancy and unique. However they are more ornamental than load bearing. Not knowing how much load the cane would bear , I would also contribute to a fund to have one made for him.

Following up on this, we have purchased the cane for our veteran and it's on its way as we type this. This cane is the style he preferred, it's most comfortable for him, and it has the notches used for self defense that these canes are known for. He wasn't too hip on the rustic canes, he is more of a traditionalist, I want to thank you all for stepping up with your ideas and leads, hopefully we'll have an image of our veteran with his new cane, and I'll share it here with you all.

I know some of you stepped up and wanted to contribute funds for this project, but I'd like to ask you to "keep your powder dry" and contribute to our annual Spring/Summer fundraiser raffle we host around May or June, full of great tools contributed by our sponsors, and the funding received is used to keep our community up to date, associated fees paid up, and most importantly to afford the occasional requests such as this "Cane Project".

The funds used for this cane project were taken from our general fund, which in reality is made up of donations from you all, in the past.

Thank you Patriot Woodworkers, for helping us, help our veterans!

Here is where we purchased the cane from:

CANEMASTERS.COM

Cane Masters offers handcrafted custom American hardwood canes and self defense systems using the cane for martial...

The cane we shipped, in the world of cane makers and users, apparently this cane is considered a self defense cane, that can put a "hurtin" on muggers, pick-pockets, and any other scallywags out there that may feel like they can take advantage of a disabled person who served our nation with honor!

Nice!!. Be cool if you pull a sword out of it.  Surprise slash, how is that, slash, stealing working, slash, out for you. Whack over the head.

Don't screw with a veteran.😁

Excellent choice John.  Glad you got him set up with what he wanted.
