Veteran in Need of a Cane

Just thought I'd bring ya'll up to date on this saga.

We finally got the cane that our veteran needs, shipped off. Here is why.

So we had the first cane ordered as mentioned above, it was built and shipped and our veteran received the cane in good time. The only problem was the can was 5" to short! He stands a towering 6'-4" and he had to bend over to use the cane. He wrote me and told me of the issue and through a couple more emails we determined that he accidentally gave us the wrong measurement to use. :(

Keep in mind our veteran is in crisis, just getting a hold of a tape measure is a challenge, so instead of using a tape measure he used a cell phone application that measures things, and he thought the results he came up with were accurate, but something went wrong. No big deal! Stuff happens!

So I contacted the cane builder and asked him if we could exchange it for the correct size, and he stated he could not (understandably) because the cane is too short, if it was too long he could do something for us. But he did try to help us out, he stated he could ship another cane out for a discounted cost, so I ho and hummed over it for a week or more, I entertained the idea of having our veteran ship the cane to me and I could splice in enough to make it the correct length and even add some ornamental features, but the more I thought about it, I just decided to go with the cane builder's offer, so we came up with another chunk of money, paid the builder, and he made the correct cane for our man and shipped it this past Monday.

I'd like to add, my discussions with the cane builder were very nice, and the president of the company Kieth Melton went one further, he added our veterans initials to the cane, along with an engraved Army logo, and he put a very durable finish on the cane which typically costs more, instead of just the beeswax finish that comes with basic canes, so they really tried to make us happy, and honor our veteran, and I think they succeeded.

Tim, our veteran asked me what he should do with the extra cane, he did say he knows another veteran, much shorter than he is, who would love the cane, I told him to go ahead and give that veteran the extra cane, I also requested images of both of them with their canes, just so you all can see what we did as a community for these men. Tim was happy to do so. Once he receives his cane, he'll get some images to us, it'll be fun to see!

So guys, I want to thank you all for your past contributions to our community general fund, without your help, we would not have been able to help these two veterans.

Please don't take this next statement the wrong way, but I gotta say. I love spending your money like this!!!! :)

Cheers all, and stand by for images! Hopefully this weekend.

Thank you, John, for allowing us to assist and keeping us posted.  This is a good story and it is great to be of support to our veterans.

I’ve been working on a bald eagle cane for a veteran through the San Joaquin valley fine woodworking club but with what’s going on I have no idea when we will get together again. I will talk to the group and see if it’s ok to give it to you guys. All I would ask is for shipping cost. If we go through with this I’d like some information about the vet so I can personalize it.

as soon as I figure out how to send a picture I will. It’s pretty much done except fo cutting it to size and any thing I do to personalize it
