February 23, 20206 yr Popular Post Well, that should be enough tags. All that resaw work, to get some use out of leftover Ash..... Gave me a few decent boards, about 5/16" thick...after a good planing, to get things smooth...Laid out a few parts that the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up could come up with a "plan" Figure these can be drawer parts... 2 parts for a lid, 2 parts for the ends of the case, and 1 part for the back... Will need to joint a few edges....these two for the lid..later. Right now the ends need worked on.. Also, need to cut the back piece to match that skinny piece out in front...as for the 2 ends? Yeah, these two. Both edges got jointed, so these match. As for length, there was a problemsky.... Shorter of these 2 was not square, on either end..and the longer one need to then match. Also needed to trim the "Back" to match the front piece for length.....you would not think it would take so long to saw through 5/16" of Ash.... Whew. Lots of real saw dust...Back piece also need ripped for width, same as the ends...I kept the "cut-off", we have a plan for it.. Ends of it will be "fingers". this also will hide the 1/4" plywood panel the drawer rides on...Means a few grooves need to be laid out, and ploughed. Now, about those two pieces for a lid? Both mating edges needed jointed, until no gaps were present... It is just sitting, nothing holding it...will trim for length, once I figure out what that will be..for now...need clamps, a caul, and a bead of glue..and a third hand... 3 clamps ( over, under, over pattern) a caul at the top and a c clamp...vise holds things still while I clamped it up....had to flip it end for end...and caul was added. the vise now acts as a caul. will let this set a day, or so....need to lay out some finger joints, and make sure they hide the grooves on the inside...trying to decide on a bottom for the case....might just be some 1/2" plywood, with a Ash edge....maybe even a molding, in Ash. 2 drawers need built, using finger joints, and a nailed on bottom, hidden by the front of the drawer....need to find 2 drawer fronts, that will fit. Stay tuned, this could get complicated
February 23, 20206 yr Popular Post Give me a few to get the beer and popcorn. Don't start without me.
February 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Short interlude...scrap barrel has been to the firepit..twice....was getting might too full....wreckage of the old saw bench went, too..Bench was cleaned off.. And ready to go....ready-use-tools are in the tool well...needed to sort out 2 drawer fronts... 2 of these will be the fronts of 2 drawers...may use a third for other things...the leftovers will trim the base. Not too sure about the current top piece...maybe set it a bit lower? Most of these were tapered...had to bring out the Jointer.. And, some of the ends needed trimmed for square...then used these parts to lay out a few fingers...to make sure they will hide a couple grooves.. Got out the "spacer" for the fingers.. Marked a lot of lines, sawed a lot of lines....needed a way to protect the top of the bench.. Then I can set the blank on the "Chopping Block".. Clamp these both to the bench...and chop about 1/2 way through... Then flip the blank over.. And complete the chops....then use these to lay out for one of the sides, saw, chop, flip, chop..and then a dry fit... One back corner is done. Will do the same for the other back corner, trying to get them to match...we'll see. On Fire Watch, this evening.....need to haul the empty trash can to the shop....and see how long before it fills up..again.. Stay tuned
February 26, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok, Tuesday is here...tried about 2 hours in the shop..had to fix the bandsaw right off the bat.. Seems that pulley was throwing the belt. Pulley had migrated inside that "cup". Allen wrench and a big screwdriver to move the pulley back out, also, now I barely hear the saw run...quiet as a mouse. Needed the bandsaw..had a LOT of cuts to make.. And chopped...Then issues with the matching fingers.....had to re-cut...ends will be 5/16" smaller, is all. Dry fit? Back is almost done....needed to lay out the front parts.. And layout where 3 grooves and a rebate will wind up at....then set up a jig... Set up the Stanley 45.. One groove across the back Depth of cut was a bit fussy. Reset a hair, do the two ends. Their grooves are for the drawer divider to sit in. Then a rebate...floor of the top compartment needs to be attached to the front, glued into a rebate, to hide the plywood edge.. Little different jig. Then start on pins, again.... had a mark to make sure I didn't cut one too many...Dry fit? One end done, then do the other end....then a dry fit with clamps... And, you can see all the grooves. This is how the case will sit on a base... But, you won't see any square holes from the grooves. need to cut 2 plywood panels, and then a glue up....going need more clamps, too. Stay tuned...
February 26, 20206 yr Author Popular Post And...we have a glue up Cut the plywood to make a drawer divider....needed to joint the sawn edges a bit.. Then a dry fit...then cut another plywood piece to almost the right size, for the floor board.. Which also got planed square, and to size.. And a test fit....then take all of this apart, clean a few spots up... This is going to be a "War Zone".....clamps and glue...everywhere.. Hmm..might have missed a spot? Moved this mess down the bench a bit...needed some elbow room.. Lid came out of the clamps yesterday...Have it rough cut for length, now. Needed to joint an edge, on it...and an add-on piece....as the lid is not wide enough..then do a rubbed glue joint Yep, there IS a glue joint there...look where the arrow is. Decided to add some clamps... About all the clamps I had left..Sandpaper is folded over, because that clamp likes to wander off, while I am trying to tighten it down...Vise as a 3rd hand, and a caul.. bench is now filled up with glue ups...guess I'll have to stop for the day.. Stay tuned..
February 27, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Is it safe to post again? Walked down to the shop a while ago.. . And started to slowly remove clamps....nothing creaked, popped, groaned....except me. Then the clean ups began...the back of the case was the easy one... Also had to use the #3 plane, to level the top and bottom edges...so this will sit level, and not rock...then the sides... One side, then the other.. Then the front...the divider for the drawers was a bit too fat....thinned it down a bit with a block plane, and cleaned up all the joints.. Then that lid....for right now.. I'll clean this up, tomorrow....wanted to make sure it was big enough... Will trim it down a bit. Still debating using bread board ends....Drawer blanks were set out, too Base: The plywood panel I WAS going to use...didn't quite measure up....so.. Jointed two edges, and glued up a panel that will fit...so..now the bench is filled up again...I'll have to wait until tomorrow. To get anything else done... Stay tuned..

Every time I THINK I have a board that will handle the job I am short 1/4 inch. kills me to cut down a bigger one. And yes sometimes I glue a piece on.
February 28, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Had a 2 hour time limit on the shop, today....no sense in working too hard for a Friday, right... Plywood base, taken out of the clamps, trimmed down to about the right size,,,,sanded smooth, and glued to the case.. Then set aside...then that lid.. Out of the clamps, and then try to trim it to size AND square.. Sanded and planed flat, because it will get bread board ends.....tablesaw to rough the tongues to size....then a wee bit of Routah work.. Oh look, a cordless one! Not a whole lot of room for error, either... As that lid is barely 5/16" thick. Then a test fit for the ends... had one spot, that was too thick, and split the groove apart...more router work, and make a new end piece Holding this lid in place on the bench was a bit..tricky Finally...got things to fit...so a glue up was done... With the vise acting as a caul, too...C Clamp on the top is another caul...let this sit til tomorrow. Used the #358 Mitre Box, to trim two drawer front for length... Doe to the clamps, case is sitting on it's top....May switch around the fronts.....working for the best grain details...also,,dug out some blanks... Once I get the 2 skinny ones cut to size, I can rip two more for the ends of the case..Moldings... Maybe add some square corner blocks for "feet", and do some fancy scroll work? Well, even put in a wee bit of "Overtime" today...maybe tomorrow, I can get something done? Stay tuned..
February 29, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Well, 3 hours today...wound up running on empty... Hate running out in the middle of a work day... Got the lid all cleaned up... There was a slight problemsky.... Not square. Buzzed the excess off, to make it square....then rounded the corners a smidge.. And figured out which hinge to use... Then worked on the case itself,,,as areas were NOT too square, either.. Needed the sides and the plywood to be flush with each other....so the "molding" would fit Front gets a fancy cut out, the back does not...once these are all dry, will be rounding the corners where they meet.... Ends also got a cut out....I will be adding a glue block in each corner, later....Set this aside. to where I could work at the bench( hate getting cramps in the toes..OW!) Drawer fronts were sized to fit.. And even picked out the knobs... Time to install the hinges? Pilot drill was in the shop.. About 6 turns per hole. hinges are 2" in from the ends of the lid....screwdriver to drive them TINY screws...was upstairs.....toe cramps made THAT a fun trip.. Waiting on the chest to dry, before the lid can go on....spent some time, getting all the parts for the drawers milled... The drawer backs needed planed flat. Drawer sides needed jointed...that sheet of plywood needed cut down and jointed for the drawer bottoms.. Toes were hurting...time to close up, for the day.....will try to get a new bottle of glue, later Stay tuned...

March 1, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Wall E World no longer carries TiteBond wood glues.....had to go across the street to Lowes...and also got the next size up. Have errands to run..might be about 1800 hrs, before any shop time goes on
March 2, 20206 yr Author Popular Post In with the new,, old with the old.. Time to unclamp? Yep.. Clean up time...and shape the corners a bit,,,and remove a few lines of dried glue.. had a squeeze-out, or two...needed to plane one area flush... Molding was higher than the plywood floor, can't have that..so Now flush. Molding corners are all rounded. Plane added a slight champfer to the top edge of the molding. Time to add the lid? I found out the 6 turns of the push drill is just enough, as 7 was too deep....oops close the lid.. Set this aside. 2 out of three tasks are done. It's that third one that's a royal..... Drawer fronts needed a rebate, to house the drawer's bottom....test fit.. Next, front needed fingers laid out.. Sawn, and then chopped, with some "finger tools".. Then repeat where needed, to connect the front to the sides.. So I can size the plywood panel to the drawer... One edge out of square, too long, too wide...about normal, lately... Got that fitted to the drawer..spread some glue..... Was just going to use nails..the Ash vetoed that idea...so a few clamps and the vise were used... Turned out, I needed 2 more clamps...even a Craftsman clamp was put to work... Well, that end the shop time...just over 2 hours, again..set the case aside, out of the way... Doesn't even rock....must have the feet just right..for a change. Stay tuned..I might even work on a Monday..
March 3, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok...here we go...Clamps came off the drawer glue up, today ( Started @ 1415Hrs, end at 1625hrs) Have no doubt these will so been back in use...Drawer was then cleaned up.. Glue joints sanded smooth and flush, test fits ( a LOT of them) showed where to plane or sand to get a decent fit... Once the drawer did slide in, without any binding, decided to add the knobs... That drill bit is just a smidge too big. Glue into the hole, glue around the knob's tenon, roll the glue smeared tenon into the bit of sawdust.. And clamp in place....was the only "clamp" I could spare....set this aside, for now.. Other drawer: same as before...seem to be getting better at these things? I also used the finger joints to attach the back of the drawer..all four corners are done.. Next? Well, it involves these two items.. Glue and the bottom of the drawer...and a whole LOT of these things.. Even needed a few more.. Might have missed a spot....was about done for the day, not pushing my luck....removed the clamp from the knobs, and slid the drawer closed.. One more drawer to do...Stay tuned..
March 3, 20206 yr Author The other drawer came out of the clamps today....had some handplane work to do.. Used both planes...other spots needed sanded flat. And a few test fits to find where things would bind a bit...added a middle divider in the drawer, to correct a bow from a clamp, the time for the handles/knobs.... find a centered spot 2-1/4" in from the edge. Brace has a "normal" twist drill bit To get the drill bit to start in the right spot.. A few good taps does the trick...holes fit better.. Just the idiot that added the glue..used too much on the first one... So, how does this project look? And.. Remember this few...as a coat of stain was soon applied... Not sure IF I'll stain the inside of the drawers, takes forever to get the smell out.. May call this a PIP? Not sure what that line is...seems to be a part of the grain? Top drawer, and.. Bottom drawer...and.. Let this sit and dry a while....before a coat or two of clear gloss poly goes on... Almost done...
