I have a Babinga bowl blank that I’m attempting to turn.  Wow!  I never run across something as dry and dusty as this one!  My shop, being what it is...(no windows and one door that leads into a finished room), I had to stop turning.  I do have a dust collector (harbor freight one that’s been modified with a filter on top) and a room air filter to collect all that fine dust.  I’m wearing an RZ dust mask and a face shield.  I have the lathe connected with a 4 inch hose to the dust collector with one of those “big gulp” funnels,  but it does little good unless I’m sanding on the lathe.

so my question to you expert turners, what do you use...?  If possible could you post a photo of what your using..?

thanks for any help.

Merry Christmas and God Bless.

I use a trendair hood/face shield for all the really nasty stuff and bubinga definitely falls into that category. That wood is very hard and the dust is fairly toxic. 3m also makes a good one that I think is probably superior to the Tredair. The Trendair has the battery pack in the hood and it gets heavy on your neck after a day of turning. I ultimately created a belt pack for the battery and solved the problem but the 3M one comes with the belt pack.

I've got the same setup as far as the mask and the major dust collector. I also have a WEN ceiling mounted air cleaner.

I'm lucky that I have a basement window in which I could mount an exhaust fan.

I use the RZ mask for most of my turnings, but I guess I’ll have to use my 3m respirator, if I decide to finish this off.  I’d give anything for a window.....thanks for the reply.

I use the same Wen air cleaner...but I certainly do envy you with a window....

I am like Lew. Wen air cleaner, a 4 inch DC hose and a window. That's as good as I can get reasonably.

My basement window is one of those "lean in" types. Is your basement cinder block or poured concrete? If it is cinder block, maybe you could remove a single block at the top of the wall and set a fan in the hole. I used a small, salvaged furnace air handler motor. The actual exhaust hole is only about 6" x 8". Word of caution- if you do this and your furnace is gas/oil fired- don't run the fan while the furnace is running. My fan will pull the fumes DOWN the chimney and into the basement.

I can put a window in, but I’m hoping to sell my house in the spring and trying to save a few bucks.  I was hoping that someone had a better way to collect a lot of the dust right at the lathe.

I have two air filters a Jet (a new one) which is very good and a JDS (maybe the beginning of air cleaners). These must be mounted at the outside wall to create a circular airflow. I have a 1.5hp Grizzly DC in the attic with a 5 inch drop changing 4 to machines. For my protection I use the Trend Pro Airsheild and when sanding the RZ mask.

If you are talking about all that sawdust or chips there is no way on earth to collect all that stuff from a lathe. Just protect yourself and sweep after turning because just walking thru dust puts it in the air.

Gerald, I was “hoping” there was a better way to collect the dust and chips...I did not think there was, but ....you never know, I guess.  Thanks, and Merry Christmas.

What Lew has referenced is mainly for spindle turning but cout be modified on a large scale.

This video by Reed Gray aka Robo Hippy shows his sanding hood. Note he is a professional bowl turner so this may be a little over the top. Bowl Sanding Hood

Then he has another about shop dust collection Dust Collection

Wow!  Interesting...but I do agree it’s a tad over the top.

I guess I shouldn’t talk about the little problems with dust.  Cause bigger things will happen...that’s just bad juju.  I have the harbor freight dust collector and modified it a few years back with the Wynn filter.  I’m not sure if it worked any better than when I had the top bag on it.  But I’m sure it’s my own fault.  When I clamped down the filter, I most likely made it to tight.  I think I broke the seal on the bottom rim around the filter.  Now it blows fine dust into my tiny shop.  So I figured I’ll re-seal it with some black silicon...now I’m waiting for it to dry.  Did it aggravate me...a little.  But then I was going to begin to make a little box.  I went to my table saw and noticed the fence was out of alignment.  I went trough the procedure, according to the manual...no good.  I read on a FB group for my table saw that the sliders wear out.  So I ordered a couple 4 bucks a piece.  3 weeks before I can get them.  Am I aggravated..?  Let’s say that I had to sit down and breathe....I decided to check the other end of the fence...guess what?  The spring clip is broken....3 weeks to get one.  Sit down again...so I thought I would do a turning...went to cut a blank on the bandsaw...BANG!  The blade of broke!  I give up!  Turned out the light and went upstairs...
