Lidded box

I just finished turning this lidded box on my new Laguna Revo 12/16 lathe.  What an awesome lathe it is!
this is a Curley maple lidded box with a bloodwood top and maple finial.  I’m thinking I should have made the finial a little thinner, but not sure.  I sanded from 80 grit to 4000 grit.  Then went over it with Triple E and then used Aussie Oil for the final finish.  This is the first time I worked with bloodwood and it is very hard, which surprised me as I thought Purple Heart was extremely hard...but the bloodwood is probably just as hard.  But it finishes beautifully.  Feel free to criticize...especially on the finial.  I’m not to good at doing them...

No criticism here. I love it. Those colors work so well together. Tha finish is awesome!

It's hard to criticize something that turned out (pun intended) so nice!

Thanks very much.  One day I’ll learn to make finials better....

Ok Pauly, tell me what is bad about the finial! I can't see it anything but beauty.

I think it may be to big for the box.  I’m thinking finials are slim and delicate looking.

As I mentioned to John, I think it may be to big for the box.  Maybe it’s just me.  My wife says I’m my worst critic.

Yes! We are. Listen to your wife Pauley! :P

I think that is one of the prettiest finials over ever seen. Most excellent! Now, how'd you learn to turn those?

I’m self taught with woodworking and wood turning.  I look at a photo and try to replicate it, or something close to it....and a good lathe helps.  The Revo 12/16 is a monster compared to my other lathe...so smooth.  It’s a real pleasure turning with it.

Thank you very much.

Very nice.  Love the color combo.  Your wife probably took possession of it right away.  Kudos!

You are getting there . You asked so here it is no punches pulled. The finial does need thinning in the top and definition on the bottom. Look at this Drozda video just to see the shape and a little on how she does it. How Cindy does it

Your box looks good . That inside is a very nice touch. You might look at adding a shadow line at the bottom by adding a round over at the bottom instead of straight into the table.

Do not be discouraged as you are doing well and my comments are meant to be constructive.

Looks great!  Some nice work.  Congrats on the new lathe, a nice one from what I have seen.

@lew posted a few weeks ago a chart for measuring finial's.  Might be helpful for you for next project.

I will definitely look at the video.  I appreciate what you said, especially about the shadow lines.  When turning, I try to step outside my comfort zone.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it’s firewood. Ha ha ha...thank you very much.

Thank you.  I had a nova Comet II and it did the job.  However the Revo 12/16 is spectacular!  I’ll check out Lews chart, thanks.
