And, here's an older version. Shopsmith ER.

Never used one but, it looks like you change pulleys to change speed.

Awhile ago, I had a 12 speed DP from HF. What a PITA that was.

:ChinScratch: That's a little closer...

Question for you "Smithy's"

Do they have reverse? :WonderScratch:

Artie's has reverse. And, a much wider speed range. It's a DVR motor. Very precise electronic control. Our old school MKVs? Nope.

Don't sweat it Larry, there's plenty of fun in the function changeovers!

I knew there had to be a down side.

First and foremost,...if I'm someday lucky enough to make it to 86 standing in my shop somewhere on my own legs with the sun on my face doing things I love to do,......well,...if only I am to be so lucky. Those are fantastic pics and a great story. Not sure what he thinks about it but I can't imagine how lucky your dad was to grow up in the catskills during that time period either.  The large set of moose antlers are impressive ! That's a lot of bone,...and a basket full of cool extras to boot. Gotta ask,..did he hunt growing up in those mountains,..are any of the racks I see throughout his shop in the background some of his kills ??  Thanks for posting this. -Aaron

Aaron, he does not hunt at all, those antlers were given to us along with that old three wheel bandsaw, the gents wife who passed these items along stated that her husband and her used to go on cross country hunting trips, following the seasons where they were.

He does have fond memories of being raised in the Catskill's, he has told me some really neat stories of his times as a kid there back in the late 30's and 40's. One of my favorite stories is how he almost lit the farm house they lived in on fire with 4th of July Fireworks, from the inside! Ya, he was one of those kids. It was an accident.

Thanks Aaron,

I've said all along, when I get old I can be happy with a small home... but I need a 3 car garage/shop to spend my time in!!!  Y'all are very lucky to have your dad in such great shape at 86, independent still and enjoying his days.

When did your dad leave the Catskills?  What did he do after leaving?  Does he still have any family connections back there?  Have you ever been there to see the area where he grew up?  Interesting that you point out his habit of hands-on-hips.  It is a normal standing arrangement with old farmers up there, but I never really noticed it, or the lack of it, after I left the area.  How about any verbal expressions from the area, has he carried any of those with him - like "A-uh"?  I have strong recollections of that common expression, usually said twice - "A-uh A-uh"

I shared a birthday with my dad.  He had a massive heart attack and died at 60 - while doing the evening milking.  Let me tell you, I had a pretty rough 60th birthday, and likely that whole year.  Now, I look at each day as the gift it is.

I learned after our kids were grown that I was called by all the neighborhood kids "plant man" because I always spent so much time in the yard.  I was happy with that, and a little disappointed that I hadn't learned it earlier:D

Cal, I am very lucky, our whole family is, my son loves going up there, he takes his air rifle and plinks away at pine cones up there, and Grandpa pretty much lets him do what he wants, runs all over the place, and eats junk all day, hey, what are Grandpa's for right?

Dad left the Catskills in the early 40's I believe, his family moved to Aurora Ill. to the wrong side of the tracks, most of the Morris family lives in Aurora Ill actually, they just moved back to join them I believe. I have never been there, but we have plenty of images I should dig up and show off. That hands on the hips, it must be a regional thing, or among old timey farmers perhaps, I was watching a documentary about the Amish, and some of those older farmers would walk around with their hands like that, on their hips, interesting! Dad still has some of his accent, he'd say he does not, but we pick it up sometimes. He has a verbal expression and says "see" a lot, kind of like the old Humphrey Bogart gangster movies and Bugs Malone. For example dad will be talking about something or demonstrating something, and he'll say "ok, I'm going to show you how to plant this peach sapling See? first we'll dig a hole bout 2' deep see? Then we'll spread mulch at the bottom of the hole see? Then after we'll set the sapling into the hole see? Cover it with topsoil see? Then water it really well see?" That's dad giving instructions.

Cal, your dad left too early, every time I hear stories like that, I feel like upping my own game on eating better and being more health conciseness than I have already become given my recent health issues. 60 is just way to young. I wish all our dad's could stick around for a very long time.

So plant man, now that is great! Is it followed up by a location, you know like "plant man of insert neighborhood here" like "birdman of Alcatraz". :)

Thanks Cal
