May 3, 20197 yr Popular Post Is it just me or does it seem like time is moving faster. I don’t know it’s probably like Global warming but any way here it is already May. It was a bit warmer in the shop this morning. Had to turn on the AC. I spent this morning working on laser engraving a gun stock for a dear friend. A couple of years back, speed of or justice system it may have been longer, his son was setup by the wife and was murder for insurance money. So he has his son’s rifle and is redoing some of it and wanted this put on both sides of the stock. His granddaughter wrote it out and one day it will be hers. This is one side of the stock, And this was the other side. I delivered it this morning and was honored they ask me to do it. We are also working on a really large outdoor “L” shaped kitchen with Green Egg and a Kitchen sink. Yep! We’ve got most of the frame work done and a few of the panels glued. Got to make several drawers yet. Set up the CNC to cut out some handled cutting boards so it was running while gluing panels. They could almost be paddles but no one does that anymore. So that’s our weekend agenda, what’s on yours? Share your projects and pictures here so we can all enjoy what you are up to in your shop. Remember, whatever do, have fun and be safe!
May 3, 20197 yr You're so right, John. The days are getting longer but, they seem to go by faster. That's a tragic tale. But, your engraving may ease their pain. Do you have to allow for the plumbing in that kitchen build? Thats going to be a really handy addition to someone's deck. As always, nice work. i just ordered a new laser. Not a CO 2 though. But, it is 5 times the power of the one I've been using. So, I'm preparing a place to set it up. It's first job will be a run of mesquite whiskey boxes. Prepping the slabs now.
May 4, 20197 yr Popular Post Gene I think our problem is since retiring we have more on the list to do and not enought go to get it done in a hurry. Since cutting all that wood Wednesday my get up and go have been gone . Did get a collar glued on hollow form and turned a couple friendship bowls. Now to get back to the offering plates if my getupandgo is better tomorrow.
May 4, 20197 yr Popular Post Gerald, that looks like a lot of hard work. There's a couple guys close to me, in their mid 80s, that break horses, wrangle cattle, and fix fence day in and day out. I'm only 78 and can barely move a a sheet of 3/4 ply without Phyl's help. My git up and go is long gone, also.

May 4, 20197 yr Popular Post John, sounds like a wonderful and meaningful time in the shop, what a great project. Now that Green Egg unit, is that a new design for you to build? And if so, could this end up in your portfolio for others to follow? Great work man! I'll try to get in the shop tomorrow, but reality is I'll probably be planting a tree in our front yard. Last week we purchased a 5 gallon Himalayan Birch, we are excited to get it in the ground and growing! It'll be a family affair. Here is the tree, not ours of course, but this is what it should look like after a few years, they are fast growing. We wanted a deciduous trees in our yard, there aren't many in our neighborhood here on So Cal, most folks have Evergreens and tropicals such as palms, but we wanted to see some color come fall, we can't wait for it to get some size! Autumn Spring/Summer

It will be in three pieces so we can deliver it and then attach it together on site. I would be happy if we got others this large. It’s a lot of fun.
May 4, 20197 yr Author @Gerald I believe your right on with the get up and go being gone! I used to be able to turn out way more than I do now.
May 4, 20197 yr Have a back porch step to re-do....and build a pair of gates...Demo has been started....in-between showers... Site work....raked out all the junk, ready for gravel to be laid down....Waiting on a couple "dry days" then things will get done... Edited May 4, 20197 yr by steven newman
May 4, 20197 yr Trees, and breaks, and more... After spending last weekend in Savannah I spent a couple days under the house on the kitchen project. Thursday SWMBO needed to travel to Norcross for a work meeting and to pick up a new (to her) truck to replace the one she had which kept breaking down. I took the opportunity to walk through a couple stores in Atlanta that specialize in counter tops. My interest is not in the counter top, but rather the back splash. I've looked at literally hundreds of pictures and displays, most all of which feature tile of some sort. The tile is not striking a chord... I've just not found one that I want to live with for the next 30 years... Looking for options, and I really didn't see anything Thursday that made me say "this is it"! But, on Thursday evening we met our daughter and her boyfriend for supper in Norcross. Before they arrived we walked around the older historic part of downtown Norcross. Very beautiful little city, tucked inside what those of us in south GA call Atlanta. I went to inspect an historical marker on one corner and discovered a Georgia State Champion Tree! A very lovely specimen, for sure. But nothing like the elm trees that I remember growing up. The elms that I remember were very tall, straight trunks, with a vase crown of branches at the top. In any event, I was delighted to have run across this tree. Now that I am back home it is back to the kitchen. If weather holds I should have the subfloor in place today. Oh yes, the wife was quite happy with the new truck. Her co-worker that was using it had it completely detailed the day before and it shone like a new penny. Lots more bells and whistles; and the company has given her the ok to upgrade it with a couple more options that it doesn't have, remote mirrors and a back up camera. Edited May 4, 20197 yr by Cal

Is this on your property, is it a blow over tree? How'd it get to the ground like that? Just curious is all Gerald, I am always in awe how my friends in the midwest are able to acquire their lumber.

It is about 37 miles to it and was extremely happy to find it. After turning some of it that was not large enough can see that finding a tree large enough to do this project was a blessed event. Tree may have gone down in November or December. He is having someone clear it and will hold another log for me . As a thank you I plan to make a bowl for him from the tree,

May 4, 20197 yr @John Morris Oh forget finding trees like this in the midwest. Was there for 8 years and most wood is hauled in. I am in DEEP south and we get lots of large trees. Just after doing one or two large projects we settle down to 12 inch or smaller.
May 4, 20197 yr Popular Post Nice, Gerald. There's a BUNCH of bowls in that old lady. Where I buy my mesquite, the guy takes down pecans that have become unproductive. He slabs them but has gobs of butts. The grove owners keep them pruned so that there's usually a good twenty feet of straight trunk. They need that space to use their tree shaker at harvest time.
May 5, 20197 yr John, if I understand the story regarding the gun engraving, it is a very sad story and I am so sorry for your friends loss. But, a really nice job on the gun stock. Are you going to leave it like that or stain and polish it? Also, a real super job on the egg work station. Can hardly wait to see the finished product. Gerald, I suppose that tree fell when Hurricane Michael went through Georgia last year. That's what hurricanes do. It appears to be a rather aged tree and a good wind storm and especially a hurricane or tropical storm would do this to older pecans and oaks. Excellent find. I see bowls coming.
