April 28, 20197 yr Popular Post Moving along with the demo prep. Have two sticks completed and my demo routine pretty will figured out. I have to make one more stick to leave in component form and then probably a few components in different stages of completion in case of a severe catch or other catastrophe. I'd forgotten what a nice project this stick is. These two will eventually be gifted to a soon to be retired neighbor and his wife. Bruce is a good friend, and more importantly, a licensed electrician . He and I have helped each other back and forth for 30 years or more. It's always a good thing for him to owe me a favor! once a few more coats of oil are applied, the sticks get a 3/4" rubber cane tip on the bottom. Edited April 28, 20197 yr by Steve Krumanaker
April 28, 20197 yr Wow! Those are nice! Did you need to use a steady rest while turning the longer portions?

On these two sticks the longest section turned is about 18" and goes from 1 3/16" or so to about 7/8" so it's still fairly stiff. It did require a light cut but was very doable.

April 28, 20197 yr Very nice. You are ready for the demo. I assume the handle is an off center turning?

The blank is 1.5X1.75 and goes in the lathe as if it were 1.5 square. There is some hand plane and rasp work to do as well but it goes pretty quickly.

May 1, 20197 yr Popular Post Steve, Did you look on Amazon for your mini compass ? Someone on AAW forum gets his compasses on Amazon and I saw some that are 20mm. and some 14mm and 12mm.

With that, it's not just the size, the style is important as well. The ones in the WOOD project were designed to be easily removable and have an O-ring for a friction fit and a nice flange to dress them up. Part of the design was a hidden compartment under the compass for matches, a map, or whatever. It's all good, the stick is still a nice turning even without the compass.
May 1, 20197 yr Popular Post That's nice and outstanding workmanship. Only one suggestion, at our age we don't need a compass. How about an emergency button "I've fallen and I can't get up"
