December 22, 20187 yr Popular Post The story behind this little "What is it", is that I had this 1/2 log piece that came with the lumber stash,pic1. I didn't know what kind of wood it was so I cut a about 6" off the end to clean up and see what I had. It turned out to be Maple. I didn't want to just throw away the piece so thought I would make a band saw box out of it. So I cut the bottom off, cut out the center, glued up the sides and reattached the bottom. The cut on the bottom looked ugly so I made a molding and then made some feet for it and called it a desktop pencil holder. The finish is 2 coats of spray shellac, and 6 coats of water based poly thinned 50/50 with water. I did stained the base/feet ,because it looked better next to the bark. Herb
December 22, 20187 yr Nicely done and very imaginative. You did that 'ole chunk of wood quite proud. Thanks Herb.
December 23, 20187 yr Quite creative. Two questions.. 1.How many pencils does it hold? 2.Who is going to sharpen them all?

There are items that are bigger, like scissors , combs, protractors, compasses eyeglasses, pen lights, tootsie pops, etc. Herb
December 23, 20187 yr Great project Herb. Don't want to second guess you, but are you sure it is maple?

Well , I am not an expert,Cal, But it does have a maplish appearance. I did think it was oak before I cleaned it up from the weight. I was surprised when I saw it wasn't because it seemed heavier than maple. I know there are different species of maple, I am most familiar with western broad leaf maple. I know that eastern hard maple is harder and heavier than our local maple, but it has a pinkish tint to the hard wood. Do you have any ideas what it might be? It came from architectural landscaping, not the wilds. Herb

December 24, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Since there has been some concern about the Pencils /Pens falling over I put some partitions in it.
December 24, 20187 yr Popular Post Even more classy than before Herb. Better give those little elves an extra cup of cocoa working OT. Edited December 24, 20187 yr by Grandpadave52
December 24, 20187 yr I'd gift you some pencils for it if I could find mine...not behind my ears either?
December 24, 20187 yr Popular Post after careful consideration... can you make another in a downsized version... that one won't fit in the shirt pocket...
