  1. The story behind this little "What is it", is that I had this 1/2 log piece that came with the lumber stash,pic1. I didn't know what kind of wood it was so I cut a about 6" off the end to clean up and see what I had. It turned out to be Maple. I didn't want to just throw away the piece so thought I would make a band saw box out of it. So I cut the bottom off, cut out the center, glued up the sides and reattached the bottom. The cut on the bottom looked ugly so I made a molding and then made some feet for it and called it a desktop pencil holder. The finish is 2 coats of spray shellac, and 6 coats of water based poly thinned 50/50 with water. I did stained the base/feet ,because it looked better next to the bark. Herb
  2. I started this project a while ago and had some interruptions but finally have them done. I planned on doing 60 pen and pencil sets but stopped at 53. I kept one set to show what they looked like before I changed them to wood. The chrome tips are the pens and black tips are the pencils. Light ones are Cherry, dark ones are Black Walnut and reddish ones are Honduran Mahogany. I left one set in their original state for reference.
  3. From the album: Shaker Furniture

I sanded the post to 220, I did not get too carried away with the sanding on the rear posts, since it's going into the steamer, the grain will raise anyway. After I took the post to 220 I marked a couple lines where the rear and side rung holes must be drilled, and where the back slats will have to be mortised in by hand.
  4. Pica is the name. This is the finest marker I've ever used. It can be sharpened to a very fine point with it's own sharpener, it's lead is thick and sturdy, and best of all, it erases easily yet will not smear or wipe off with handling. I don't know how to embed a video so here's a link. I bought mine from Woodcraft.
