The staves are only half inch thick might be a little tough to spline them.

1/8 x 1/4'' spline...

cut thew groove on the TS and use luan for the spline...

Managed to route the rabbet, got the base made and glued in.

Ya' did good Pat. What method did you end up using? Template similar to what Lew sketched up?

I see and get it but with what this will be (for show only)and the bands around the outside(opportunity to try steam bending) I don't they are necessary for this application.

Good morning, I'm working on planing the sides of the firkin round and this is how I'm holding them. I have to hold one size with my hip so not as easy to get a good stance. Any suggestions for how to hold it better?

20181021_100140.jpg

turn the firkin 90°..

use the vise to hold it..

use wedges/blocks/tapers to help control rock...

stand it on end..

bar clamp it to the table w/ part of the firkin hanging in free space....

plane vertically..

You are doing a good job. When I do buckets, I put a dado in the bottom of the stave before I taper the stave. The dado is 3/4"  up from the bottom, and I make the round for the bottom and install it as I put the bucket together, it helps keep everything round during assembly. The bottom basically floats in the dado,no glue.

Herb, that is exactly what I'm planning to do in the future. I'm also going to try to cove the inside to make that round as well. I kind of like the look like this but its not what the originals would have been.

Also I found that if I taper the edge of the bottom it fits into the dado better, kind of like a panel in panel doors. The tapered staves cause the dado to be slightly out of parallel with the plane of the bottom, unless you angle the dado slightly. By the way there are some good formulas on the web for calculating the dimensions of stave from you furnishing the diameter of the bottom and number of staves etc.

Looks like maybe a job for a JawHorse. The ability to open the jaws up to 37 inches would probably be enough to grab it end to end.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see enough information from the original poster in this thread to back up that claim.

Guys, this is what I used to complete my task.I clamped the clamp into my vice and then clamped the work into the clamp.

Stick thanks for the point in that direction.
