Good day Patriot Woodworkers! What y'all doing this weekend an what have you planned for shop time? Also, what have you planned for life? Any topic is welcome, birthday parties, woodworking, trips, anything.

So, lets hear it, plans, we want your plans!

 

A Good Project

I'd like to share a wonderful project Steven Newman has been involved in, and it's finally done! As we all know, Steve is our neanderthal woodworker to our community, his projects always involved extensive hand work, and patience, and he works in a small space that would turn most woodworkers into, well, non woodworkers! I have always admired Steve's zeal and commitment to the craft.

The current What's It will be drawn tonight for a random winner for a one calendar year membership to the MWTCA.

Taking the wife out to the range so she can sight in her new rifle, getting the DC hooked up to the new saw so I can start cutting with it, building the under table storage are items on the agenda for this weekend. Also, I am going to pick up the lumber for the legs, feet, and rails for the new work bench.

I recognized four of those pictures. Unfortunately, my obliviousness prevents recall of their names. but

Not Lew but and inertia sander is used on the lathe. There is a bering allowing the head with sandpaper Angle Sanding System to rotate as the lathe turns.

Took a few trips...needed help with the base unit.    Added plugs to the top of the bookcase...and a couple coats of shellac...then added latches to the two doors.  Sooo..

 

Plugged and shellaced (nad a little work with a handplane...)

Sitting in it's new home..

Sorta but without the "random". It's good for the lower grits but hand sanding is still used.

 

Same thing can be done with an electric drill but this is just a bit lighter weight.

medium sized pine bowl. finish is beeswax/mineral oil (food safe).

 

the blank was chopped off a large beam that has been sitting outside for at least the last 7+ years.

 

that's our kitchen in the background.  i designed and built it a few years ago.  it only has 44 drawers, 13 lazy susans, and the island is 10 feet long, with 30" deep cabinets and counter.  great for baking.

"Kid Stone" arrived early this AM without a reservation or calling in advance. It has been pretty painful making accommodations for "him" today. Hopefully he'll pass through with minimal attention and move on to a watery grave.

 

Assuming so, Sectional Swim Finals tomorrow at 1 PM. Oldest grand-daughter advanced out of preliminaries in the 3 events she had qualified...all personal best times but a faster than previous years field overall. First sectional for youngest...did not qualify for any final events, but two personal best times and moved up several positions in her overall rankings...Twelve degrees with strong NW wind last night after meet...they wanted ice cream from DQ...kids Of course they got it

 

Little else as one to ???? inches of snow are predicted late tomorrow through Sunday PM. Day 1, tomorrow of Punxsutawney Phil's Curse called out today. Evil little rodent

i appreciate the skill that goes into something like Lew did for Easy Tools, as featured in the turning section recently, but i like my stuff to be useful and beautiful.  i made a similar one a few months ago, and gave it away at the pistol match (random draw for the prize table), and the guy who got it remarked "hey, you could dump your keys and stuff into this" - bingo.  exactly what i had in mind.  yeah, you can also put dry goods in it too.  but guys always have a pile of crap in their pockets every day they need to put somewhere.  how about a cool bowl?  done.

I spent the day bouncing from project to project.  The most important project was to "carve" a plaque for the front of our communion table at church.  The table had, "Do this in Remembrance" on the front but our Senior Pastor wanted to add the words, "UNTIL HE COMES ..." on the back of the table.  The table has a 5" skirt around the top and is part of the table.  None of the woodworkers in the church had a router template acceptable to rout the letters so I put the Carvewright to the test.  I laminated a piece of white oak over a piece of walnut and planed the oak to about 1/8" while planing the whole piece to 1/2"  The letters are carved in to a depth of 1/4" so there is a shadowing effect.  After I do a trial fit, I'll rout the edge with a 5/32" Roman Ogee bit which will add to the 3D effect.  The skirt is 54" long so I'll cut the plaque to 34" and enter it on the table and screw it on from the back of the skirt.  Oh yeah, I glued up 11 cutting boards and put three folding wine tables together also.  Good day!
