January 27, 20188 yr Hey Patriot Woodworker's! Here we are another weekend and a late Friday topic, sorry about that. But we have to ask, "What is on your woodworking agenda this weekend?" Any and all events to discuss are welcome, shoptime, outside work, honey do's, kids birthday parties, the grands coming to visit, you can talk about it here. My weekend Working on our patio shade structure again, just nipping away at it one board at a time, with kids around it's kind of challenging to get a good roll, I'll hang a joist, then I have to break away and pick one up from an event they are at, come home, hang another joist, "Hey dad, I need help with my science project" oh ya, and Mama is in the middle of it all getting things done too, as many of you know with kids, it's energy and excitement most every day. But we are getting it all done, the posts are up, the supports for the shade pieces are going up, and next weekend I should be installing the 2" x 3" shade slats across the supports. Easy Wood Tools Is in Florida, if you are in the area, drop on by and say howdy! @Jim from Easy Wood Tools may be there, I am not sure. So that's if from me folks, hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and life treats you grandly and wonderfully!
January 27, 20188 yr I need to clean up the shop. Finished turning a piece of Manzanita and tools/sand paper/shavings everywhere.
January 27, 20188 yr Brother and SIL and their daughter were here for three days. Had a wonderful visit. He left with the gun box. He liked it. He left me some olive for his next gun box. When it's done, we'll deliver it and pick up a bunch more olive wood. It's a really pretty brown color with nice grain. It's surprisingly light in weight. It'll make good wood for boxes. While he was here, we visited an outdoor sale of tools. We each bought a new twenty volt Dewalt drill. His was a hammer drill. Paid $50 each. His came with the case. Mine, with a bag. I'll be going back there! River table is getting it's cracks and voids filled with turquoise and epoxy. Hope to get to final sanding tomorrow and start the legs on Monday. The glass should be ready to pick up in Phoenix in a couple weeks. Can't attach the legs until the glass is set in place. Edited January 27, 20188 yr by Gene Howe
January 27, 20188 yr I actually did some maintenance this week. I went around to all the furniture with wooden drawer slides and took Johnson's paste wax and put a coat on the bottom of all the drawers and the runners. 30 drawers total which includes the kitchen. They all slide smooth a silk again. I'm always amazed at how well that works and how long it lasts. Started a small project on the metal lathe ant plan to finish that up this weekend.
January 27, 20188 yr Popular Post The weekend is going to be a write-off, with in-laws and out-laws coming from "Out West" for the "Celebration of Life" on Sunday, and funeral on Monday. The LOML was getting a little stressed, so we decided to just go for a drive and find some roads we'd never been on. After two hours, we found ourselves in the little village of Stirling, Ontario, which was home to my wife's grandparents, and back to her G-G-grandparents. Went into a little eatery which we like, and took the only un-occupied table, right in the front window. Waitress (owner) brought menus, and another couple came in, looked around, and noticed all the tables were taken. LOML told them they were welcome to share ours if they didn't mind. Long story short, we exchanged names and home locations, got some info on some things to see in the area, and after a half hour they excused themselves and left. I finished my pie (best coconut cream pie EVER!) and we asked for our bill. The waitress informed us that the gentleman had taken care of it! I guess there's still good people left. We went on to see the aircraft museum they recommended (well worth the admission!) and slowly made our way home. I DID write their names down on a napkin, and the general location of their home, and the next time we're down in that area we'll try to locate them. Probably drop off some home baking, or whatever. It turned out to be a lovely day! John Please excuse my long-windedness. And sorry, but no tools or woodworking involved.
January 27, 20188 yr Popular Post When does the weekend start? Being retired, every day is a weekend so there is no start or stop.

January 27, 20188 yr May head out to the garage for a bit...sun now shining and up to 51o;; Just completed a "driving lesson" with oldest grand-daughter...she aimed us to her boyfriend's house about 9 miles away...good experience; through two small towns, fairly heavy traffic today on rural State Highway...even one Stop Light...a lot more practice is needed Church, then lunch & some errands tomorrow...depending on temperature and ambition quotient I may stumble around in the garage again. For those of you who will perform tangible tasks, Be Safe.

Got home around 8:00, checked the mail, and THERE was the tie-in to woodworking! A package from MWTCA!!! Three copies of The Gristmill (June, September, December), a 2017 Membership Directory, and a re-print of the January, 1898 E.C. Atkins & Co. saw catalogue. Just sorta put the icing on the cake! A wonderful day, indeed!!! John

January 27, 20188 yr Slept in till 515 (normally up at 430). Filled the woodbox for the stove, cut kindling and starting wood. Took down one of the new lights that quit about 5 hours after startup, exchanged it to home depot and went grocery shopping. This afternoon, the new light is up with the others, cleaning the shop and moving stuff around in different locations to see where each tool will go. Tonight, my boss is taking the excavation crew out for a steak dinner for a task they completed in a single day a week ago. Nothing motivates like a free steak dinner. Tomorrow, I will complete my table saw assembly. Then, hopefully, start on the under table cabinet for it
January 27, 20188 yr I actually got out to the shop today. Lit the woodstove and had a chance to clean out a lot of cardboard, styrafoam and other items that ended up there during the holidays. Seems the cold dampness rusted the table tops on all the power tools. For now I wiped a bit of WD 40 on the surfaces to stop the progression.
January 28, 20188 yr I finished a pair of cherry bookcases today and I'm playing with the Carvewright that go dropped in my lap. This unit is 5 years old but never had the first board run through it. I ran one sign through it, made an adjustment to the font and ran a second board through it. I'm getting drift in the Z axis and either the servo or the encoder is bad.
January 28, 20188 yr Trying to get this StepBack Cupboard done enough to slap a bit of finish on it....got a wee bit done, today....
January 29, 20188 yr Left restore early to go on a road-trip with my neighbor. We stopped at two more restores and i had a small machined angle plate follow me home. After a bunch of other stops we finally checked into a Chinese buffet and left there stuffed like one of their mushrooms (well, i assume they were mushrooms). Further stops at Cabelas, Marcs, Big Lots, Home Depot, and HF rounded out the day. Came home, strapped hot pad to lower back; sat on couch, woke up and went to bed. Almost forgot; SWMBO brought home her mom's rocker as it's coming apart from both sides. Dug out some clamps and my wood glue (glue may all have to be replaced, but...). Have plenty of clamps and yes, MIL is off her rocker (well, for right now, anyway). BTW, get along well with her so need to get this done so she gets her favorite chair back. Told them if they could do that they could drive anywhere. Surprise!, I'm still here to tell the tale.
