September 6, 20178 yr Popular Post Spent the day subbing in the IST class. Nice group of kids. Lots happening here, this week, with our Patriot turners. @Steve Krumanaker started an interesting thread on what we, as turners, find acceptable when creating a piece. He posted a picture of a vase that seemed to defy what most of us would consider a nice turning. He received lots of feedback on his comments. Check out the vase and what our Patriot turners thought of it. At the other end of the spectrum, @Smallpatch was curious as to how anyone could possibly create this awesome piece Read more here- @Bundoman posted some really nice turned bowls. The natural edge is his first attempt at that type of bowl- I should have been so lucky on my first attempt- See the description and more images in his thread @Gerald added additional images to his hollow forms and bowl/platter galleries. His talent for shapes and colors is fantastic- @Steve Krumanaker found an article on midi lathe reviews by Mr. Ernie Conover, published in the Woodworker's Journal. You can read the reviews here- http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/review-midi-and-mini-lathes/ The Woodturning OnLine newsletter is out. As always, interesting content. If you have (or know) a little one, there's a cute little pull toy that can be made on a lathe- The entire newsletter is at- http://www.woodturningonline.com/index.php I spent some time finishing up the little iron wood bowl. The finish is several applications of wipe on poly. The base and finial are from mesquite burl. The entire project was turned with Easy Wood Tools. Safe turning
September 7, 20178 yr Thanks for the post. I like that bowl and that is a neat finial. The rinks set it off nicely.
September 7, 20178 yr Nice recap of the week. I really like the Iron Wood bowl and the base is spectacular. It is such a beautiful piece of wood that could have easily ended up in the burn pile. Very nice usage.
September 7, 20178 yr Your Wednesday posts are awesome. Really nice job. I'm sorta partial to that ironwood piece. The mesquite spindle and stand really sets it off. That burl was just waiting for you to work your magic.
September 8, 20178 yr Author Thank You guys for all of the kind comments. Always appreciated! Gene, that mesquite burl has really fantastic character. It is my favorite part of this piece.

September 8, 20178 yr Lew, in the next few days, I'm headed up to the place that has those Manzanita roots. I'll take a camera. For those unfamiliar with Manzanita roots, think burls grown underground.
