I have not seen an oak like that since I've lived in CA, since birth. Our oaks look like this. Which is quite pretty, but not too conducive to long slabs, but the figure is striking.
April 13, 20179 yr Both oak and walnut are pretty scarce in AZ. None suitable for lumber. But mesquite is abundant in the southern parts. This is a small one, but wait 50 years. It'll get 5% bigger.

April 13, 20179 yr Author I was driving down the road the other day going to get some lumber and spotted this burl on a tree. I'm trying to find out who owns the land and see if I can get it. I bet it had some nice figure to it.

Reminds me of the "live oaks" we used to see in and around Charleston, SC & Savannah, GA.; just missing the Spanish Moss.

It was the only time I heard him mention how expensive his wood was.
April 13, 20179 yr It ain't cheap if you buy from a dealer. Most of mine comes from firewood guys. The last batch I got from a dealer. It was right at $50 for one 4/4, 6' long 10" wide board, rough sawn and live edge. I needed 4.
