TY It took me a long time to figure out where to be perfect, and where to let is slide, and not only that, but to step back from a project, come back the next day, and sometimes what seemed important yesterday, just isn't that important today. We get so honed in on a specific area of our work, what we may think is a completely horrible unsightly gap one day, if we come back the next day, it really aint all that bad, in fact the gap may just completely disappear visually and psychologically. It's just like life, we get in a bubble, everything within that bubble is magnified 10 fold, 100 fold, but once we step outside of the bubble, and return, the stuff that mattered, just don't really matter anymore. It's like joining our nations military right Justin? Before we joined, we were just johnny go lucky on the spot living in our bubble small towns, still thinking about that grand touchdown we made in our senior year of high school while playing football, talking about Suzy good looking girl down the street, and complaining about the prices at the corner market. Then we sign on the dotted line, take the oath, and BAM!!!!!! The bubble explodes, you're in a far off place in the world, and now, that touchdown don't mean squat, neither does Suzy, and neither does the prices at the corner market. Our world view changes. Working on projects is the same, it's all a bubble in the shop, at the moment, at the time, when you start to get frustrated with a project, more than likely all you need to do is step out of the bubble of the project, and revisit the project a day later, two days later. And when you return, most likely what bugged ya, won't. Often times folks will post images of their work here in the forums, and they will make a comment about how they hate a specific area of a project, how it bugs them. And what do the rest of us reply? "Hey Mac, it's looks awesome! I don't even see what your complaining bout! What are you talking about, looks great to me!" It's all because we don't live in the same project bubble, and we are looking in, at the project, and we don't see those flaws. Case in point, that rustic feeding trough you built, we all thought it was one of the most cool rustic projects we'd seen, yet you saw every flaw in it, you're not alone my fellow woodworker! So, the flaws you see, we most likely will not see. And there is the fine line of perfection, and presentation that you have to learn. When to stop the quest for perfection in a project, and move on, and when to stay on an area of a project, because truly the flaw will show, and it could kill the project. All of that comes with experience. And you are well on your way my friend, you got the heart Justin!
March 3, 20179 yr You realize, of course, that you have created an ongoing project for yourself now? She's going to want her "favorite daddy" (as my daughters used to call me when they were younger) to create more beautiful projects for her (and more boxes to store "stuff" in). That's ok... Go for it. Have fun. Be careful. Don't beat yourself up over every little flaw.... truthfully doubt the family will see them or care. You put love into that box and her smile proves it.
March 4, 20179 yr Jay, to be rewarded with such a beautiful smile from such a gorgeous young lady would have me back in the shop making lots more boxes....or whatever she wanted. Good job, my friend...good job.
