January 19, 20179 yr Popular Post Web-frames. What I use in a case to let drawers slide in and out. Made long before those new-fangled metal thingys ever came along. last episode, I had all the parts cut to length, to make 6 frames. Today? Well first a "prototype" was sawn out.. Yeah, a tenon. The problem today was how to make about 24 of these tenons, without a lot of time being used up. Hmmm, I have that Mitre Box, and it has depth stops I can adjust.. Right there, under the guide, is a brass collar. Loosen the set screw, and slide up until you reach the depth you want to stop at. Did both the front one, and the one in the back. I used the prototype under the saw blade, to set the depth. while the prototype was sitting there, I screwed a stop block to the deck. so, I could do the other 23 tenons' shoulder cuts, and wear out my elbow, at the same time. Slide up to the block, cut until the saw no longer cuts, flip to do the other side, flip again to do the other end. Next, needed a way to cut the cheeks of the tenons...re-saw jig on the bandsaw was slid around a bit.. I pushed each side through, until the waste just fell over, rotate or flips as needed...soon had 48 of these little scraps laying around. As for the tenons? 24 tenons were soon done( the other ends look just like these) Next, I needed another jig. Had to go and dig it out...and then "up-date " it.... The side pieces were too tall, made new, lower ones. Spacing was too wide...ok, I clamped a part and the two new sides together in the vise Drilled a few new holes for screws, and screwed the base in place. Need this attached to the bench top, right over a leg.. With a few screws. Now, I can use a pair of Visegrips finger clamps to hold a rail, while I abuse it for a bit. Chose a tenon to use for the layouts. Used a backsaw to make a couple cuts.. Sawn at an angle, so as not to overcut too much, Have another way to dig out the waste.. The mortise chisel chops down at the back, then I can just pop the waste out. The wide chisel to fine tune things as needed.. Plan was to fit each tenon to it's new home. I also marked on all the parts, which part goes where. After a few chops, I could check for square.. Let's see, that be 4 tenons fitted in place, a lot of flipping going on here. I also cut some old, nasty pine into a kicker.. A kicker is to keep a drawer fromtipping down, when you pull the drawer out a bit. While the M & T joints will get glue and nails later, the kickers will get a screw on each end, and a spot of glue. So, shop time started at 1130 hrs, and ended at 1500 hours....what did I get done? Three frames are ready to be assembled with glue, nails, and screws. First, I had to get these off the washer, before the Boss sees them. Will try to get the rest of these done, so I can clear the bench and do a lot of assembly work. Been a long afternoon...stay tuned..

January 20, 20179 yr Author Popular Post Ok, have all the Mortise and tenon work done. Cleared the bench. And started to assemble these things.. IF I can quit being a driver today...I might get the rest done? Have two like this done, and the bottom frame.. Maybe later tonight? Need to get all of the frames assembled and ready to attach to the sides. Then, MAYBE...I can attach the sides sometime tomorrow? THAT might be fun to see....like a One arm paper hanger? More on these frames later, after I get the things built.

January 21, 20179 yr Good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise (much more), I'll be here tomorrow and supervise your progress Shop Cat OK...haven't seen him around lately?
January 21, 20179 yr Author have a regular "crew" of Shop Cats working down there..... Up-date, up-date, up-date.... Might need to buy a new tripod? Old one is getting a bit loose. These are screwed and glued in place. Will need a few extra hands tomorrow to flip this assembly onto the other side. and attach the frames to it. Used a framing Square to keep things lined up... The bih holes are counter bores. To allow the screws to reach the side better...
January 21, 20179 yr That is the problem with bigger pieces, getting them assembled and moved by yourself. That is still looking great
January 23, 20179 yr Author Have a little bit more done, today....sooo, an Up-date coming up. When I went to add the second side to all those web-frames, I ran into a problem. I had to chisel out a pocket for the frames to sit into. Surrounding area sits up a bit...1/8" in some spots. Once the chisel work was done all the way down the side ( WITH the rest of the case sitting there, I could add the screws and attach the second side. Love that Squeeek when a screw gets tight, Placed the case on it's back on the bench, about the only place large enough to hold it. Added a clamp to keep it ON the bench. The rest of the clamps? well the pipe clamp was to draw the sides into the dovetailed ends of a rail to make a face frame-like front. Dovetail? Just one, on each end... The "tail" was done on the bandsaw, as I can't get to the bench vise right now. The "socket" it goes into? Hand chopped with a couple chisels. Glue only to attach.. I also spread a bead of Elmer's along the front edge of the web-frame. Couple clamps to pull things tight. The one on the kicker? Was to align the top edges. Kind of cramped, right now.. Got two rails installed, and ran out of clamps.....well at least enough to do one more rail. Glue only at this time, no metal fasteners have been used on the rails. just screws to hold the sides of the case together. Once the rails are done, and the back is installed, I can sit this thing on the floor, and work on building a top. Went out and got a 1/3" x 4' x 4' plywood panel, and a couple pieces to help build the top. After those "tours" yesterday...I think I'll call it a day.
January 23, 20179 yr "Tales from the Dungeon Shop"...5 Stars...Siskel & Ebert says, "must see, 2 thumbs up!" Take a break...remember tomorrow is Monday...
January 24, 20179 yr Author Popular Post OK, I took Monday off, as usual. Bad things tend to happen on Mondays in the shop... Today, got a late start. But had a few things to get done, before the next chore is started... Layout tools. The bevel square is preset to the angle for the tail/pin ( whichever) Bandsaw to make the cuts. Vise is covered up right now. Something like this? Both ends were sawn, then the rail placed over it's new "home". I used a square to keep the top of the rail and the frame flush with each other, and marked around the tail. Then the fun can begin.. The main weapon of destruction. Used a couple others to finesse the fit. Finally got the socket dug out, down even with the web-frame But, I couldn't install the rail just yet. I had to finish the entire side here, rotate the case around and work my way back the other way. Until things were done on both sides, though, I could store each rail in place. Then remove just that rail, and do the other end.. The top rail was a little different. I used a half dovetail. Top of the rail was flush with the top of the side. Would have broken out, anyway. As I went back down the other side, I could glue and clamp each rail as it was done. Pipe clamps to pull the sides tight, the rest to hold a rail in it's place. Couple of the web-frames needed to be pulled into line, as well Started to both get a bit crowded, and I was running out of clamps. .. Got all four rails done. Will have to let this mess sit a while, until the glue is done. However, I can use the bandsaw.. And resaw the parts for the top's frame. They need to be 1" thick, so that slab just had to go. Need to cut one more to length, and then resaw it. Ends are also resawn down, now. Joints at the corners will be a bit..fancy. Each of these will get arebate for the plywood panel, and a molded edge. Might make use of that Stanley 45..again. Busy Afternoon. About just under 3 hours? Maybe tomorrow, I might get something done? Stay tuned.
January 24, 20179 yr I'm tuned in...I might be Looney Tunes, but tuned in just the same... Good days progress.
January 25, 20179 yr Wow you have got it going on! you have made great progress. I'm watching this closely!
January 25, 20179 yr Author Clamps are now off, and put away. Back now has a 1/4" plywood back installed. Parts for the top's frame have been sawn, corner joints have been sawn. Looks like I will have just enough plywood to make the plywood panel for the top. Methinks that will be quite enough for one day.
