 Celtic knots by halfacre.  This is whats on the heading after I went and found the picture.

 John I am just now realizing what is transpiring. You my man are trying to address

 my question I asked back in Jan.

     After I posted a picture of those celtic knots lots of people didn't realize what I did to end up with  the completed picture hanging on the wall...What I asked of you was more or less to copy or come up with the same type of group of pictures with the one big one and the secondary group of pictures that is more or less important to some one who might want to build something similar to what you first see when looking at the pictures of that days posting.

  You first see the picture of what I am showing, a Celtic knot picture. Fine, but if you glance to the right you can see a few shots of what I did to get to the finished product....Not important to some. Then read some of the remarks. Some are puzzled and surprised...Those pictures to the right don't have to be looked at unless someone wants to make something like that and not a clue as how to start..just click on one and it gets big enough for a better understanding of whats taking place. I should have shown the pattern I used to glue on to the wood to start with and that would have covered the entire process, kinda.

  Now if someone wants to go back and find that picture for their curiosity is still on the back burner , maybe by typing ,Celtic knot picture by halfacre, they might get to that site. I got a few private messages asking for more help. 

This is the good part of those pictures over to the right side. If no one is interested right then they don't have to bring any up at that time. The pictures are small in the back ground but large enough to want to bring them up for a better explanation.

  For some strange reason some guys don't like to show what they have learned over the years!!

 

      Something else I found. When someone sends me a private message asking more questions there is no place to post pictures with my reply at that time. I find that strange for pictures do lots of explaining. This is the only time I find on their wood site I can't post pictures??? but now it could be me and just can't find that button to push.

You can add pictures to your private messages the same way you post them in topics Jess.

Also @Smallpatch, you can do exactly as you are describing by using our photo gallery, and more. You can display your images, with a main image, with detailed descriptions, links, files, and formatting in a variety of ways, and members can give feedback and ask for more detail. You can create a full set of tutorials using the photo gallery. 

From what I am understanding and hearing, our software is far more intuitive and flexible and dynamic than anything going on at LJ.

Jess, you can duplicate that effort by creating your project in the gallery instead of forums, you can provide as much detail as you want regarding the project, and upload your images, and you can even add in-depth descriptions for each image you upload. Once you submit the project, you'll see individual thumbnails as well.

 

For example you can see a gallery I created for veterans awards, to the left of the gallery you'll see a description I added.

Just like in LJ's, you can see some of my projects I submitted by going to my page at http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/profile/1-john-morris/

and click on the "Albums" tab.

 

Perhaps if we named "Albums" to "My Projects" it would be more clear in its intent.

@Smallpatch, the gallery has not changed since I made the same suggestion back in January as you can see by the quoted post above, back then I had suggested you use the gallery for your tutorials and feedback. The core software changes to our community have yet to be seen by our users, at this point it's just a couple little features here and there and security since our newest upgrade, but the gallery remains the same.

I am making the same suggestion today. If this suggestion works for you, let me know and I'll close out this suggestion as satisfied, or we can pursue this one a bit more to your liking. Our software has been far better than what LJ uses back when you first made the suggestion, and it remains so today.

Sorry for sounding so arrogant folks, I take it back actually. The one thing we are lacking that LJ is masterful at, is the traffic, it has always been a conundrum with us, the traffic and membership. To reach the heights of LJ's, I don't know if its achievable. But we'll keep plugging away, hey, "The Few, The Proud, The Patriot Woodworker's"!!!!

To paraphrase the Captain in Cool Hand Luke- "What we got here is a failure to interpret the numbers"

LJ's reports 212,560 members. What's not said is of those 13, 860 have less than 2 posts . They also report 3,394,385 comments. That averages out to be about 6% of the membership participates. Their members with greater than 500 comments (my cutoff for active) is 1015. Calculating that against the total comments gives .5% of their membership is "active". I think we stack up pretty well when you look at our participation rate. Also, LJ's has been around for a little over 11 years. Imagine how many members we will have when our 11 year anniversary rolls around.

Where they do excel is in their projects. We are doing better at that, lately. I think that is one of the draws for a site- folks looking for ideas.
