August 27, 20169 yr Charles, think of slipping carbon paper in the joint. It will leave the high spots with color on them. The sand paper trick just eliminates the high spots to conform to the other side of the joint. Hope that helps.

If you need carbon paper try Office Depot, Staples, etc. They should still have it. If not there then a good artist supply storet.
August 28, 20169 yr Art supply stores carry those really big sheets of graphite paper. It's marks are erasable.
August 28, 20169 yr Author @Charles Nicholls I am lazy today, so I did not get the video up I promised you, but I think I found one better, here is Scott Morrison performing the same method on one of his rockers. I hope this clears up the mystery for you. If not, let me know, and I'll make sure you get this one way or another. Now Scott is using the sandpaper fit method for his legs to rocker fit, I use the sandpaper method for a perfect joint for the same reason when I build my chairs. I use it for the arm to rear leg fit, and the front leg to bottom arm fit and the rear and front leg to rockers joint. Actually I learned the sand paper fit from Hal Taylor and his book on building rocking chairs, as I built mine. And I have used that trick for other aspects of woodworking as well when a fine joint is required. So without further adieu, here is what I think may clear things up for ya sir.
