April 30, 201511 yr On the road, looking for some rusty stuff. First place we stopped at had a bunch of stuff....Just needed a bunch of cash Like this get up. Didn't have a spare $100 bill to buy it with. Model number is a 3000. Oh, just around the corner of that barn, there was a "Parts" saw Label on it says Rockwell. Way too many issues, and no motor. And, no price... There was a bundle of saws sitting out on a flatbed trailer..4 saws for $2? Of the four, that Tool Box saw is JUNK, by Great Neck. There is a Disston National Hardware Special and a D-7 full sized saws. There is that panel saw with a steel plate riveted to the handle. Have the D-7 torn down, bolts cleaned up, and the two parts of the handle glued up in a clamp. Hmmm. Spent a whole $2 so far, On to the next sale site......not open? Ah late afternoon sale, not going to wait around town for five hours. On to the next on the list.. Found a place on Aldrin street. Had a router set up for a shop. Router tables, jigs, and a big box of bits.....$85? Well, already have all of that, pass. In the fron of the garage, a shaper with a cast iron top, and huge tray of cutters and jigs......$260? Pass. Got to looking around on the tables, picked up a box with two planes in it. Yep, two planes! The box was what that blue Great Neck Corsair C-4 smooth plane was sold it. The little blue object with it? A Little Giant Razor Plane, the one that was an oval (egg?) shape? Still has the Wilkinson blade in it! Haven't figured out who made the two chisels ....yet. This box was $6 plus two for the chisels....$8 total. Not too bad a day. Cheap. Other than going to Menards, to buy the wrong sized bandsaw blade ( return for the correct one tomorrow) and lunch. Not too bad a day...
April 30, 201511 yr Well Heck, Steve. That table saw stand is worth $50...at least. Goof\d buys on the saws and that box of planes. And 1 buck apiece for mortise chisels ain't too shabby neither.
May 1, 201511 yr Author The three saws have been checked out: Have a Disston National Hardware Special 8ppi Have a Disston D-7 crosscut @ 10ppi. A small panel saw @ 8ppi with a steel plate riveted to the handle. It even has an etch......Columbian Brand it says. The fourth saw went to the trash can.....Great Neck Tool Box saw, with them teeth you can't resharpen. Took the Corsair apart.....yep, iron was installed upside down. Happens a lot. Will need a trip to the stones, and it just might make a shaving Little Giant plane? Sitting here on the desk, trying to decide what to do with it. Chisels won't even cut a paper towel right now, but...Ve Haft vays.... Got a few other sales I might try to get to this weekend....
May 1, 201511 yr Author Two saws are now cleaned up and ready to go The Disston D-7 10 ppi crosscut saw. Brass is now shiny, and "clocked" As for "Shorty" plates are shined up. Found an etch, too So far, not to bad for a quarter a piece? As for the plane shaped thingy? It will be heading to Rehab later.
May 2, 201511 yr Author Ok, upon further review: Seems the short saw with that metal plate was a "local" one. Columbian Brand Saw Works of Indy, IN, made by Atkins. As for the "D-7"? Not really a "D" model. A wee bit older model, call a No. 7 Lightweight Ship's Pattern saw. Brass bolts are from that era, as is the medallion. Open top style handle, rather than the later "closed top" handle. There is a FAINT etch showing up, now. Can make out parts of the Henry Disston and sons across the top of the keystone. There is no "D" inside the Keystone logo. So, this saw is from before 1928. Maybe right after WWI? Have the Corsair all cleaned up. Sole was actually flat. Iron is now flat, and sharp. Chipbreaker needed a bit of work, to mate up with the iron. Everything is tight, no looseness, no backlash. Handles are even a hardwood....ooooh, aaahh. Undecided about the Little Giant Razor Plane. These were sold as a two piece set, in a single box. Mine was the oval shaped sole, the other was a flat soled one. Balsa wood planes, mainly. Those two chisels? The 1/2" wide one has "Drop Forged" stamped on the back of the tapered blade. Tapers in width, wider at the edge. Has beveled sides. Brass ferrel, and a washer like thingy on the ends. Washer MIGHT be a leather one. The 1/4" one seems to be a sash chisel. Both have a blue and silver logo label. Still trying to find out what company sold these. Top it of? The Pony Express finally showed up with that RED Sears smooth plane No. 107-37033 made by Millers Falls. Has a small crack at the mouth, and goes up a little on the one side. Used carefully, should be ok. Might take a bit more work than the Corsair C-4....because it also cost three times as much. There is also a NEW to me Millers Falls No.11 sitting on the table. Same size as a Stanley 5-1/4 Junior Jack plane. From just BEFORE WWII, type 2. All cleaned up and ready to go. Same size exactlly as the Stanley Four Square Household Jack plane I have. Millers Falls seems to be a Collector's plane for me. Have the No. 8, 9,11. and the No.14 bench, with the Sears, and a No.1455 Low angle block. Just missed out on a No.22....Drat. Not a bad week, for being out and about. Didn't even rain.
May 8, 201511 yr Author The third good saw out of that bundle has been cleaned up. Rather spiffy now. Took a sander to the saw's plate. Took a wire wheel in the drill press to the bolts. This is what came out of maybe a 1/2 hour's work... There is a readable etch going on there.. Seems this saw was made for the "National Hardware Show" in 1954. This is Henry Disston's National Hardware Special. At least that is what the etch says. Cleaned up nicely, though If I were to keep it around, though, I would need to sharpen it up, just a hair on the dull side of things. Three saws for $2? That works out to be .....$0.66 each? Still might clean the Great Neck Tool Box saw up, just to see what it does look like. May have to refinish the TB saw's handle. A little weather beaten... BTW: now I have TWO of those Disston National Hardware Specials in the shop. Wonder what to do with them.....
