From the album: Thar she blows
I had just made a thin rip table saw jig and I thought making a windmill would be a good way to test the jig. And the jig worked great. I cut most of the wood out of scrap 2x4s. The blades I made out of the bottom of a $1 store 10" pie pan. I didn't like the way the vane turned out so one day soon I will redo it. Many mornings I sit in the chair in the garage just to the right of the windmill in the picture and drink my morning coffee. It is kind of relaxing to sit in that chair and watch the windmill start and stop with each little breeze.- 5 comments

I could not find a forum for metal working and I would say that 90% of all my tools is 25 years old or older. So I hope I posted this in the right spot. I built this Windmill over 50 years ago and I'm now putting on it's third set of blades. First set was made of wood. Second set was plastic. This what I'm hoping is the last set will be made from aluminum. Each blade is five feet long. I generate low voltage to run outside night lights with this mill. Everything made with stuff from the junkyard. The head is made from a VW beetle. One picture is me dragging the tower with my Dads tractor to where it gets stood up.

I made this windmill about a year ago. I used an in line skate roller with ball bearings for the center hub. About a week ago I looked out and it was gone. I found the parts scattered in my neighbors yard. We had some wind gusts over 50 mph and I figure something let loose and it flew apart. So I gathered up pieces and saved what I could. Today I reassembled it and strengthened it at the weak points. Next step it to put a tiny generator on it to light a light, any ideas where to find one? Each vane is about 8" long

I made a fun windmill several years ago and the weather had taken its toll on the wooden parts. I remade another one out of the old one, however the only thing I reused was the roller skate wheel that the blades fit in. The rest are new, including the Styrofoam blades and tail fin. This is a prototype and will be revised. It is really working good, but since I made it of Styrofoam poster board That has paper on both sides. I did paint it but in this high altitude (Denver) The sun's rays are very destructive.
