A friend of mine gave me a pickup truck load of wood. He was helping his neighbor clean out his shed, the wood was in there when he had bought the property in the mid 80’s. Looks like it was salvaged from shipping crates and boxes from overseas. Some of it looks like mahoganythe rest of it I can’t identify. See if yall have any ideas.

As you can see from the picture I have a beautiful piece of wood. Although it is a very common wood from HD cull wood pile. As I walked by, this piece of beatle kill pine caught my eye. It wasn’t straight and had a bad edge. The color mix was great. I cut it into pieces, glued some of them and turned it down to 3 1/2 dia x 12 inches. there is no finish on it yet and I haven’t decided what I’m going to make out of it. To be continued……

I toss all left over exotic wood scraps in a box. Even the tiny ones. After a while I see what I can make by gluing then & turning them. Sometimes I also fit flat pieces together like the butterfly, which is about 3” high

My wife was looking for a piece of furniture and we sent in several stores. I'm glad she didn't find any but I did see a table that really impressed me. I asked about it and the sales guy told me it was imported from Africa and was VERY heavy. It took several men to move it. He told me the name, but I can't remember it. The price.......$9,700. However it was on sale from its regular price (I didn't ask)

My wife does a lot of crocheting, knitting, etc. She keeps her knitting needles and hooks in containers that I make. She loves the exotic woods and wanted a new one that she sized for me that is about 4" high. I found some Purple hart and I'm not sure what the other wood is. I put felt on the bottom of the hole and under the base. She is happy, happy wife, happy life

Hi all, Just recently moved back to the Island. Does anyone know a local(ish) source for exotic wood for turning blanks? I'm talking pen, bottle stopper, small bowl size. I don't expect much. I know how limited everything is here but I hate the thought of buying wood sight unseen on the net or driving 100miles to Seattle area. Thanks, Doc
