Motor Upgrade Question

Featured Replies

I have a Delta 36-640 Contractor II table saw. It currently has a Marathon 1.5 HP replacement motor on it. I just picked up a brand new 5 HP motor for $50 that I'm considering using on my table saw. RPM will be the same. Can this machine handle it? If so, should I increase the size of the belt and motor pulley width to match? Or is this asking for trouble? Thanks in advance!

I imagine the new motor is a bit heavier than the current one. I wonder it the tilting mechanism trunnions will support the extra weight.

My Bridgewood contractor's saw gets out of alignment when tilting the blade- worn trunnions- so that the "far" end of the blade is further away from the miter slot than the "close" end (blade not parallel with miter slot)

I have a older Craftsman with a 1 HP motor and that has some heft to it. I see no advantage to using a 5hp motor, a 1.5hp should give you all the power you'll need for a table saw.

I don't think I would do that. Like Bob said 1.5HP is plenty for a TS, and the weight of the motor might be a problem.

Not to mention that a 5 HP. motor will have a considerable amp draw difference than what you have and will require a new electrical circuit dedicated to the saw. Just be aware that you might be opening a hole different can of wormsWonderScratch

@lew - I had not considered the weight. Thank you.

@DuckSoup - The reason I've even considered it is due to past experience trying to cut a foreign species of rough-cut hardwood. Even moving at a snails pace, it just didn't want to cut. I thought that increasing the motor size might help with similar situations in the future. My next saw will be a 3 HP Grizzly or SawStop.

@Rusty S - I just wired my garage and it passed the inspections. Electrical isn't an issue for me. Worst case scenario, I'd just put a plug on it for the 30A breaker/receptacle I put in.

@Drumone can you post a picture of the nameplate from the motor?

After further consideration, I've decided not to swap the motors. Torque, weight, and a few other factors have made me reconsider. Now to figure out what to do with the extra motor... 🤔

Wrap it in plastic to keep the dust off & tuck it away till the need arises.
