May 28May 28 Popular Post Now that the bench is cleared off. These arrived soon after..along with a plan, of sorts..Those yellow stickers?So..Laid out the first couple of parts I need to cut..Then more figuring things out..and lay out and cut one of the end pieces..Recently sharpened this handsaw, might as well give it some work to do...Got both ends cut to length, almost...but, since I do not have a Chutting Board...Those yellow stickers needed to be removed, so..Stanley No. 82 took care of that detail ( sticker USED to be inside that red circle..)Needed to split one of the longer pieces..D is for Drawer front..drawer is to hold the fence, rods and cutters for the Sash Mortise ( weather strip) plane..cut line was a bit wavy..we have ways..Joint them until they match..Next time in the shop..I need to connect the back corners to start making a box. I do not like them HUGE dovetails Paul Sellers used...mine will be a bit smaller..So, sweep the shop..And call it a day..Stay tuned...Oh, IF that plan looks familiar..Because I have built a couple over the years...this one was for ..Was to house a set of Chisels...Like these dovetails better?
May 28May 28 Popular Post BTW, I see those HF chisels. They aren't anything beautiful, and the grinding on them is off kilter, at least on my set. But they work just fine. I built my bench mostly with those, and used them a while. Replaced them with the Aldi set, which they don't sell anymore.I think they are a better chisel than the HF ones, but it ain't really the tools, it's the guy using them. MHO.
May 28May 28 Popular Post A friend of mine once did a lot of sharpening research (taking his own photomicrographs of edges rather than reading the internet) and was a big fan of the inexpensive stuff from HF and HD, getting good results from both chisels and plane blades. As you say, it's not the tools so much as the guy using them, and knowing how best to sharpen them! Edited May 28May 28 by JWD
May 28May 28 Author About $15 or so out the door...at Harbor Freight...So..these are the ones in that Desk Top Organizer....Factory grind on the back is flat As is the bevelSides are also factory ground..Waiting on the 2 sets from Aldi's to wear out,,,might be a while.. May 28May 28 Author Wrote out some text to go with those photos...where did it go?Will try to get a start on dovetails, later today..
May 30May 30 Author Hmmm...Pins first, as always..Stanley No. 77, used the single pin side to scribe out the baselines...set to the thickness of the boardsThen lay out some pins..Then make use of that saw..( going to use photos from today's excursion as well..)Chopping block set up..Inside face down...I do the outside (show) face first..Chop about half way down, leave a "porch" to support things..flip the board over..I do use a coping saw...like a narrow rasp, to level the bottoms at ..Set this up on the "Tail Board"I use a sharp No.2 Pencil to trace around each pin..then over to the bandsaw..as I can see the lines better, and stay on the waste side of them..A Dry fit...again..This is from yesterday..the other was from a little bit ago...check the corner for squareRunning Type for both corners? About an hour per corner...So, next time in the shop..This will be the front of the upper compartment...there is to be a drawer below this. Getting "slow and Fat in Me Dotage?"Floor of the compartment? will be sitting on "slips" that I'll have to miter and glue in place..Then a thin piece of plywood will be glued to them. Stay tuned...
June 2Jun 2 Author Popular Post Took a chance, today...and did a wee bit of puttering around in the shop..on a MONDAYLay out some more pins..And do a bit of saw work...then chop out the waste..Trace out the matching tails, saw them out..Repeat for the other end..Dry Fit for now...Checked for square, and to see IF I do have enough clamps...Let this sit a spell, had hedges to trim back from the Sidewalk and alleyway...This evening..dragged the Tablesaw out and put it to work... Cross cuts and rips...to make 2 panels..Made a mess of the shop floor..Set those 2 aside...needed blanks to build the drawer with...One drawer front, 2 to make the sides, one for the drawer's back, and one for "Just in case" spare..set these aside..Next...floor of the compartment sits on a 1/4" plywood panel...but not in grooves...panel sits on "Slips", which I needed to make..Zero Clearance Over Lay..custom made push stick...thin strip is just a cut-off..these will get cut to length, mitered on the ends, and glued in place.New Push stick was a bit too wide for this, but, the rest of the rips going on..This work quite well...note the handle? It leans to the right a bitOut of the 5 planks I bought..this is the "Leftovers"4 pieces? MIGHT be enough for a small box? Stay tuned
June 3Jun 3 Author Before I could glue that box together...I needed this tool..Was using the single pin to mark Baselines, needed the double pins set to the thickness of the slips. and mark out where the slips will be glue in..All the way around, so that the slips will set level. Then..we got Flash Mobbed..La Foret de Pinces? Took a couple more than I planned on..kept checking with a square, too...As for the slips?Had to dig up the handsaw...Hmmm, how does one get a burn mark using a handsaw?Slips will get miters on each end, the glued in place, hopefully inside those lines I "pulled"Stay tuned..
June 4Jun 4 Author Rebate has been sawn on the underside of the lid about the thickness of the saw blade, all 4 edges were done.(no photos, Sorry)A plywood panel has been marked up , sawn out, and glued down on to those slips with clamps and cauls..(no photo available)Bull nose edges were done to both the Base panel and the Lid Panel....Stanley No. 3, Type 15 and the WR No. 62 were used...end grain ends done first, then the long grain edges...had to work at NOT cutting into the wall of the rebate....marked a center line. Marked out a stop line, so the Bullnose stops right before it reaches the side of the box. Rebate to the underside of the lid, allows clearance for the barrel of the 2 hinges. ( no photo available, sorry)Will be starting on building the Drawer soon....Have to glue the box to the base, first...Stay tuned...might be more text?

June 5Jun 5 Author Popular Post Hmmm...Rebates to the underside of the lid....fun partIs doing that bullnose without cutting into the wall of the rebateThis is the end grain of the bottom panel I needed a center line, and a Stop lineThat's each face, and every edge,,,That's 8 times, as I do one face from the center line to the stop line, starting at a 45 degree bevel and rolling the plane(s) over until I hit the stop line, turn the board around, do the other face, smooth out the facets with 220 grit sand paper. Rotate and Repeat...Should look like this when I am done..Bottom/Base will get glued to the bottom of the case.Top will just get hinges. Drawer 101 will start soon..stay tuned..
June 6Jun 6 Author Popular Post try again...Drawer Building 101?Get the drawer front sized, and the grain to match up..Then cut the rest of the parts to size...We do have a Plan as a Guide..Hmmm, half blind doveatils for the front..and I do pins firstCarried over from the top ...wax up that saw, we have work to do..Note the old candle laying in the Tool well. A Kerf Chisel was used next..Blade is Stiff, Putty knife is by Red Devil...ground to match the thickness of the saw's kerf...just hammer it down to the Baseline. Then, clamp the board to the bench, we have more chisel work to do..Trace around these Pins, onto the Tailboard (Drawer side) bandsaw out the waste, and try a dry fit or 2..Repeat for the other end of the Front...back part gets through dovetails...Same as the front..saw, chop, trace...saw...and a dry fit..Tablesaw to mill a 1/4" x 1/4" groove to fit a 1/4" plywood bottom panel...a few dry fits to get the panel the correct size...dry fit?At this point, time for Glue & Clamps..Checked for square...let this sit a spell..Stay tuned..
