Thin Board Project

Now that the bench is cleared off.

Thin Board Project, 5 boards .jpg

These arrived soon after..along with a plan, of sorts..

Thin Board Project, possible Plan .jpg

Those yellow stickers?

Thin Board Project, from where .jpg

So..Laid out the first couple of parts I need to cut..

Thin Board Projct , 1st layouts .jpg

Then more figuring things out..and lay out and cut one of the end pieces..

Thin Board Project, 1st cut .jpg

Recently sharpened this handsaw, might as well give it some work to do...Got both ends cut to length, almost...but, since I do not have a Chutting Board...

Thin Board Project, shooting vise .jpg

Those yellow stickers needed to be removed, so..

Thin Board Project, sticker removed .jpg

Stanley No. 82 took care of that detail ( sticker USED to be inside that red circle..)

Needed to split one of the longer pieces..

Thin Board Project, front pieces cut .jpg

D is for Drawer front..drawer is to hold the fence, rods and cutters for the Sash Mortise ( weather strip) plane..cut line was a bit wavy..we have ways..

Thin Board Project, joint 2 edges .jpg

Joint them until they match..

Next time in the shop..

Thin Board Project, back & 2 sides .jpg

I need to connect the back corners to start making a box. I do not like them HUGE dovetails Paul Sellers used...mine will be a bit smaller..

So, sweep the shop..

Thin Board Project, swept the shop .jpg

And call it a day..

Stay tuned...

Oh, IF that plan looks familiar..

Chisel Case, Witch's Brew,front view.jpg

Because I have built a couple over the years...this one was for ..

Chisel Case, Project Post, full set.jpg

Was to house a set of Chisels...

Chisel Case, Witch's Brew, opened up.jpg

Like these dovetails better?

BTW, I see those HF chisels.

They aren't anything beautiful, and the grinding on them is off kilter, at least on my set. But they work just fine.

I built my bench mostly with those, and used them a while. Replaced them with the Aldi set, which they don't sell anymore.

I think they are a better chisel than the HF ones, but it ain't really the tools, it's the guy using them. MHO.

A friend of mine once did a lot of sharpening research (taking his own photomicrographs of edges rather than reading the internet) and was a big fan of the inexpensive stuff from HF and HD, getting good results from both chisels and plane blades. As you say, it's not the tools so much as the guy using them, and knowing how best to sharpen them!

Wrote out some text to go with those photos...where did it go?

Will try to get a start on dovetails, later today..

Hmmm...Pins first, as always..

Thin Board Proj., Layout tools .jpg

Stanley No. 77, used the single pin side to scribe out the baselines...set to the thickness of the boards

Thin Board Proj., Base lines .jpg

Then lay out some pins..

Thin Board Proj., Pins laid out .jpg

Then make use of that saw..

Thin Board Proj., last cut done .jpg

( going to use photos from today's excursion as well..)

Chopping block set up..

Thin Board Proj., Chopping Block ready .jpg

Inside face down...I do the outside (show) face first..

Thin Board Proj., chop halfway .jpg

Chop about half way down, leave a "porch" to support things..flip the board over..

Thin Board Proj., finish chopping out .jpg

I do use a coping saw...like a narrow rasp, to level the bottoms at ..

Set this up on the "Tail Board"

Thin Board Proj., trace around the pins .jpg

I use a sharp No.2 Pencil to trace around each pin..then over to the bandsaw..as I can see the lines better, and stay on the waste side of them..

Thin Board Proj., Dry fit #2 Corner .jpg

A Dry fit...again..

Thin Board Proj., Dry Fit, Outside Corner .jpg

This is from yesterday..the other was from a little bit ago...check the corner for square

Thin Board Proj., checking for square .jpg

Running Type for both corners? About an hour per corner...

So, next time in the shop..

Thin Board Proj., NEXT up .jpg

This will be the front of the upper compartment...there is to be a drawer below this.

Getting "slow and Fat in Me Dotage?"

Floor of the compartment? will be sitting on "slips" that I'll have to miter and glue in place..Then a thin piece of plywood will be glued to them.

Stay tuned...

Took a chance, today...and did a wee bit of puttering around in the shop..on a MONDAYJawDrop

Lay out some more pins..

Thin Board Proj., front, laid out, sawn .jpg

And do a bit of saw work...then chop out the waste..

Thin Board Proj., front, pins chopped .jpg

Trace out the matching tails, saw them out..

Thin Board Proj., front, both ends done .jpg

Repeat for the other end..Dry Fit for now...

Thin Board Proj., front, inside square, too .jpg

Checked for square, and to see IF I do have enough clamps...

Thin Board Proj., front, pre setting the clamps .jpg

Let this sit a spell, had hedges to trim back from the Sidewalk and alleyway...

This evening..dragged the Tablesaw out and put it to work... Cross cuts and rips...to make 2 panels..

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, gled up panels .jpg

Made a mess of the shop floor..

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, messy .jpg

Set those 2 aside...needed blanks to build the drawer with...

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, drawer parts .jpg

One drawer front, 2 to make the sides, one for the drawer's back, and one for "Just in case" spare..set these aside..

Next...floor of the compartment sits on a 1/4" plywood panel...but not in grooves...panel sits on "Slips", which I needed to make..

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, making slips .jpg

Zero Clearance Over Lay..custom made push stick...thin strip is just a cut-off..these will get cut to length, mitered on the ends, and glued in place.

New Push stick was a bit too wide for this, but, the rest of the rips going on..

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, handle off set detail .jpg

This work quite well...note the handle? It leans to the right a bit

Out of the 5 planks I bought..this is the "Leftovers"

Thin Board Proj., tablesaw, leftovers .jpg

4 pieces? MIGHT be enough for a small box?

Stay tunedOldManSmiley

Before I could glue that box together...I needed this tool..

Thin Board Proj., glue up, No. 77 marking gauge .jpg

Was using the single pin to mark Baselines, needed the double pins set to the thickness of the slips. and mark out where the slips will be glue in..

Thin Board Proj., glue up, slip home .jpg

All the way around, so that the slips will set level. Then..we got Flash Mobbed..

Thin Board Proj., glue up forest of Clamps .jpg

La Foret de Pinces? Took a couple more than I planned on..kept checking with a square, too...

Thin Board Proj., glue up, squared .jpg

As for the slips?

Thin Board Proj., glue up, slip & saw .jpg

Had to dig up the handsaw...

Thin Board Proj., glue up, mitered end .jpg

Hmmm, how does one get a burn mark using a handsaw?

Slips will get miters on each end, the glued in place, hopefully inside those lines I "pulled"

Stay tuned..

Rebate has been sawn on the underside of the lid about the thickness of the saw blade, all 4 edges were done.

(no photos, Sorry)

A plywood panel has been marked up , sawn out, and glued down on to those slips with clamps and cauls..
(no photo available)

Bull nose edges were done to both the Base panel and the Lid Panel....Stanley No. 3, Type 15 and the WR No. 62 were used...end grain ends done first, then the long grain edges...had to work at NOT cutting into the wall of the rebate....marked a center line. Marked out a stop line, so the Bullnose stops right before it reaches the side of the box. Rebate to the underside of the lid, allows clearance for the barrel of the 2 hinges.

( no photo available, sorry)

Will be starting on building the Drawer soon....Have to glue the box to the base, first...

Stay tuned...might be more text?

Hmmm...

Thin Board Proj., Bullnose, Rebate done .jpg

Rebates to the underside of the lid....fun part

Thin Board Proj., Bullnose, end grain to rebate .jpg

Is doing that bullnose without cutting into the wall of the rebate

Thin Board Proj., Bullnose, end grain first .jpg

This is the end grain of the bottom panel I needed a center line, and a Stop line

Thin Board Proj., Bullnose, stop line .jpg

That's each face, and every edge,,,

Thin Board Project, Bullnose, Long grain .jpg

That's 8 times, as I do one face from the center line to the stop line, starting at a 45 degree bevel and rolling the plane(s) over until I hit the stop line, turn the board around, do the other face, smooth out the facets with 220 grit sand paper. Rotate and Repeat...

Thin Board Proj., Bullnose, all done .jpg

Should look like this when I am done..Bottom/Base will get glued to the bottom of the case.

Top will just get hinges. Drawer 101 will start soon..stay tuned..

Coming along nicely Bandit.

try again...Drawer Building 101?

Get the drawer front sized, and the grain to match up..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, drawer front .jpg

Then cut the rest of the parts to size...

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, parts .jpg

We do have a Plan as a Guide..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, The Plan .jpg

Hmmm, half blind doveatils for the front..and I do pins first

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, crried over .jpg

Carried over from the top ...wax up that saw, we have work to do..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, sawn .jpg

Note the old candle laying in the Tool well.

A Kerf Chisel was used next..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, Kerf chisel .jpg

Blade is Stiff, Putty knife is by Red Devil...ground to match the thickness of the saw's kerf...just hammer it down to the Baseline.

Then, clamp the board to the bench, we have more chisel work to do..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, chisel work .jpg

Trace around these Pins, onto the Tailboard (Drawer side) bandsaw out the waste, and try a dry fit or 2..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, Dry fit front .jpg

Repeat for the other end of the Front...back part gets through dovetails...

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, dovetail back .jpg

Same as the front..saw, chop, trace...saw...and a dry fit..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, Dry fit back view .jpg

Tablesaw to mill a 1/4" x 1/4" groove to fit a 1/4" plywood bottom panel...a few dry fits to get the panel the correct size...dry fit?

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, dry fit, bottom panel .jpg

At this point, time for Glue & Clamps..

Thin board proj., Drawer 101, glued up .jpg

Checked for square...let this sit a spell..

Stay tuned..TwoThumbsUp
