Dovetailed and Sliding Lid Box

Featured Replies

@lew, one of my favorite works has always been your candle box and holders. I'd like to use your box as inspiration for a box I am making for keepsakes. My box will be 10" x 12" x 5".

Is there anything else going on with your box I need to know for building? I can pretty much make out what's going on and start to build, but just thought I ask ya if there's anything I need to be aware of, such with the sliding action, the raised lid, the carved finger pull etc.

Thanks!

Giving the box it's elegance appears to be the thinner lumber, did you mill it down to 1/2" or 5/8" by any chance? Also, are those 45° dovetails ?

I'll be following along John nibbling on any bread or donut crums along the way.

Ya, Lews execution was beautiful. Something about that set that is simply plain nice, must be the appeal I have for 18th and 19th Century crafts.

Style fits perfectly with your Shaker Oval boxes.

I'm practicing dovetails today, to get ready to build Lews box.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! @John Morris, I built the box and candle holder from these articles in Woodcraft magazine. The material was walnut about 3/8" thick. The dove tails were 1:7 angles. I did use my router table to create the sliding lid dado and the table saw to make the top bevel and bottom rabbet
