July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post Happy 4th of July Folks! I'll have to see how the weather plays out this weekend "Two Weeks From Anywhere" Mother Nature may or may not allow opening of the "Outdoor Shop". So, as I wait to see if I'll be allowed to play out in the shop. What's on Your Weekend Agenda?
July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post I plan to take it easy and get some shop time in. But first, I have to go in to work briefly today - it's the one clear day forecast before we start our summer maintenance on Monday and I need to check that I can rig a piece of fall arrest gear where we need it before next week. Need clear weather for that for complicated reasons. Should be fine though, and I get to show the new tech how to use the tall scissor lift. I've seen her climb a 65' ladder on a truck at the local VFD though, so I bet she doesn't have trouble with heights! In the shop I'm finishing up a cutting board I promised a couple months ago, then trying to make some progress on a big batch of grips that I sell. I'm always behind on those, production isn't fun, it's work!
July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post Today will just be a laid back day, which reminds me I nee to go put up the flag. Youngest daughter and family are visiting tomorrow, so it may be Sunday before anything else around ere gets attention.
July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post Today, shop time…Tomorrow is our annual Saturday in the Park so I will be doing “official duties” throughout the day culminating with fireworks. Sunday is worship and rest day, finally.

July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post The past week has been a mowathon; finishing what I didn't get done the week before then starting over. I'll finish the last acre, roadsides and fench rows today. Need to unload my car yet from auction PU yesterday then find spots for everything. Wish I had the shop where I bought this stuff; all block building, formerly a hog farrowing, nursery barn. Guesstimated 24'-30' wide x 75'-100' long part of which was heated and air conditioned. Mrs. & I picked another gallon bucket of blackberries last night; close to 5 gallons so far; lot more still to ripen yet. Granddaughters car needs some TLC. We'll watch the Ariel show from our yard by the next town over tonight; rest of the family is in the UP. County wide, Annual Tox-a-Way day tomorrow. I have 50 qts +/- of used engine oil, couple small tires, NiCd and LiOn batteries to dispose. Sunday school and church services Sunday.
July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post A nice quiet day here at the homestead. We decided against the July 4 party this year so today will just be a mellow laidback day. The maple arrived for the closet projects yesterday so I will begin cut lists this weekend. Before the closets I need to make a new tool chest using some of the maple. Paul
July 4, 20251 yr Popular Post After power washing more of the driveway yesterday morn , then p/u tractor $$$ at the shop and haul home, and finally play on the dirt .Decided to rest this morning . Now to go to shop for a bit more packing and maybe load some more brick on truck in prep for ranch work tomorrow.
July 5, 20251 yr Popular Post I started another small project with my granddaughter yesterday. Should finish it tomorrow and will post a picture when I do.
July 5, 20251 yr Well, it's been a weekend of remembrance. A friend, Glen Huey, passed away last week. Also a woman that I played bridge with passed a couple of weeks ago, two days after I saw her last. Another woman who was a church member passed and funeral is Monday. And two decades ago my parents passed, one a week before July 4 and one a week after, two years apart. Also, there was a plane crash that killed 6 people in my small home town.

Well I finished my granddaughter's project this morning. I am proud of her. The shadow box was her idea, she cut out the green felt leaf and drew the veins in it, she stained the pipe cleaner green that we used as the grape vine, she mixed the paint to get the purple color for the grapes and painted the bottom of the clear stones and she placed the stones after I put down a blob of CA glue.
July 5, 20251 yr Popular Post Spent most of last night (5 hours or so) in the ER....seems that Max nailed the Boss on the back of her hand, with one of his paws...even tore a strip of skin...4 hours waiting IN the ER,,until I raised a wee bit of a ruckus...They THEN worked on her hand in the office they do Registrations in....( Said something about just ONE Doctor working that night, and dealing with 2 motorcycle wrecks.... A bit of shop time today...otherwise, about as little as I can get away with...even less if they let me...film @2300 hrs..
July 5, 20251 yr Popular Post Well, I might get a "new" table saw. My daughter and her husband are looking at buying a house with his brother near the local campus as there are 6 of their children that are likely to attend college there. One house they're looking at has this in the basement

July 6, 20251 yr Popular Post @Bubba..kudos to your granddaughter for her artistic vision, creativity and craftsmanship. Kudos to you grandpa for the help and encouragement on the project. All well done!
July 6, 20251 yr Popular Post Pretty well finished with the front porch. The new steps and trim boards still need to weather enough to be stained, but the original deck boards are finished. The wife talked me into using vinyl railing kits instead of wood. Goes against my grain but they look nice. I did manage to slip in a little joinery though. The corners of the trim boards are held together with draw pinned blind mortise and tennon.
July 6, 20251 yr Popular Post The vinyl railings/balusters are a good idea. Our last house had woodenones, and they ere a PITA to strip and repaint. Then to add to the insult, they had a lot of wood rot. I replaced them with vinyl. Yeah, it went against my grain as well....but in the end it would have saved me some headaches (if we hadn't sold that house).
