Haven't tried this but can I ask your bowl gouge orientation? Are you using a push cut? I believe a planing pull cut would be best for these. I would also definitely cut the blanks with a hole saw and just eliminate having to remove the corners.

    Steve, I tried both push and pull, the pull definitely worked better. As it is I've got everything done now, but I do thinks cutting the blanks with a hole saw would have made life a little easier.
