Popular Post DAB Posted November 11, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 11, 2024 i've been invited to a Christmas get together with some friends (shocking, yes, i have a few), and we've all been asked to bring an ornament, wrapped, under $10, for a swap thing. hmmmm....don't really want to go shopping, but....i have a shop with tools, so i'll come up with something, either involving my lathe or my scroll saw, or a blow torch (last option). have 3 weeks to come up with something. Thank you to all of our veterans. Mimi said we should go out for supper to "celebrate". To be truthful, I feel sorta embarrassed about taking advantage of the free offerings on Veterans Day. Yes, I am a veteran. Yes, I was in the Tonkin Gulf. Yes, I aligned radars and computers for accurate bombing of enemy positions. But, there are so many other vets much more deserving. I am extremely fortunate to have been able to create a good life for myself and family. My physical and mental health are fine. Maybe it's just me, but there are so many vets far worse off that I am. Please thank them for their service and sacrifice. But, also, If you know a vet that could use a meal, go pick her/him up and take them for one. Stop by their place and say "Hi" from time to time. Make Veterans Day everyday for veterans. John Morris, Headhunter, DAB and 8 others 10 1 Quote
Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted November 11, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 11, 2024 So after a week of recovering from the previous Friday's issues, I finally felt pretty decent. The afternoon, being a quite nice day especially for November, I finally put on some pants, (actually shorts), and ventured outside for the first time in a week. Very slowly, but steady, I managed to unload some stuff from my car purchased the previous Friday; a 20 lb bag of cat food, 35# bag of whole peanuts (for Bluejays, cardinals, etc.), a case of bottled water and some bagged items. I've been told I have no restrictions and could mostly do things as before surgery. I continued on cleaning, filling bird feeders and water trays, picked up some sticks/limbs, a few small outside maintenance items, stumbled around the garage a bit, fed and watered all the pets, and some other small tasks. Anyways, felt good doing something, nothing really hurt, all seemingly going well. About 6P, out of nowhere seemingly, my catheter drain bag went from clear to bright red...thankfully no clots. This was a new experience and my brain said, probably not good but who knows. I felt fine. Being unsupervised, I went against "home regulations" and decided it best I get shaved, showered and cleaned up before Mrs. got home. All accomplished as she arrived. Still feeling "fine", I got fully dressed (again the 1st time in a week) and off to ER on a Friday yet again. Friday nights in ER are interesting but stories for another time. Anyways, after about 3-1/2 hours there, a "wet" CT scan, some blood work, exams, etc., their "best guess" was the extra activity resulted in a small, internal blood vessel(s) had become irritated. By the time we left, internal bleeding has stopped (nor has it recurred). I was told to "take it easy" (give me a break) until next Urologist appointment (Nov 25th) but return if bleeding recurs. Other than some minor discomfort the past couple days, I feel fine or as good as one can feel toting extra "baggage" around. Some observations: there are no donut shops open at midnight; a Burger King Whopper Jr is slightly better than nothing at midnight even when you haven't eaten in 10 hours; probably not a good thing when night shift ER admissions desk, some nurses and the doctors remember you and call you by name; not quite like Norm on Cheers but getting close. Aside from that, IU defeated Michigan. Not a pretty win, but a W is a W. Being 10-0 for the first time in school history and seeing it in my lifetime is pretty cool. Not much else to report... Oh wait, on the way to ER, about 4 mile from home, my wife hit a deer...a BIG BUCK. Looked like a 55 pt one Anyways, she wasn't going that fast, was able to brake some, partially steer around, remain on the road while still missing the others lined up waiting to cross. Bucks in rut season are crazy. We pulled off the highway and initially with phone flashlights (duh forgot the ones in the console and glove box), it didn't appear we had any real damage. IDK how? Subsequent inspection in the daylight on Saturday revealed the front bumper cover (plastic??) is cracked; nothing broken loose, thankfully still functional and drivable, just the hassle getting it repaired especially this time of year. As a side note, she has had 5 Jeep Grand Cherokees over the past few years. All but the first one has attracted a deer. However, one of them got 2 so that evens the odds. OK, sorry for all whining, griping, ranting and complaining but after being laid up for two months, it's come down to this. Hope your weekend went well and you found a donut shop open somewhere. I'm going to call my congressman today. It should be a state law donut shops remain open 24/7 to meet any unforeseen emergency. End of rant...who am I kidding...no it isn't. I still have 3, 40-50# bags of birdseed to unload from my car yet and my donut Rx has no refills. Gene Howe, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Larry Buskirk and 6 others 2 7 Quote

DAMHIKT No. Not familiar with them. In hind site, probably could have gone to Payless (Kroger owned). IIRC they're open 24/7, but a long walk in and they're scary enough during the day so I can only imagine on a Friday at midnight. Larry Buskirk, Gerald, HARO50 and 4 others 2 5 Quote

Nada3; probably something across town in West Lafayette around the Purdue campus but I generally avoid that area August-May if at all possible. I'll take my chances out in the open with crazed deer versus getting near campus on a Friday night. Larry Buskirk, steven newman, Headhunter and 5 others 2 6 Quote
Popular Post forty_caliber Posted November 11, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 11, 2024 First things first. Thanks to all for your service. I put up our flag at sunrise in remembrance of my father, a WWII vet. Worked the antenna farm this morning. Changed the tree rope from 1/8 para-cord to 1/4 kevlar. The para cord was starting to fray 40' up in the pecan tree. Checked and tightened mast guys. The USGS approved my application for a lifetime senior National Parks pass. This allows us to take the RV to a laundry list of federal camping spots. There are many COE sites here in Texas alone. Still thinking of plans for the rest of the week. .40 lew, Fred W. Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted November 11, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 11, 2024 Staying close to the kitchen to assist Marie with her holiday baking extravaganza. I slip out to the shop for short periods to putter around. At some point (tomorrow, I hope) I'll be mowing the lawn for the last time this year and cutting down the remaining flowers to prep for the winter. I hope to start working on a Kissmas tree later this week and spending some time with the lathe. Larry Buskirk, lew, Headhunter and 3 others 6 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted November 12, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 12, 2024 "Picked" a cardboard box, filled with "Household Tools"....for $15......threw a few items away...bad putty knives, used tube of caulk...and this thing.. But, I kept the drill bit that was stuck in it.. Was only 16 pencils left, BTW... There were 4 decent brushes... Black & Yellow DeWalt screwdriver? Couple of Pliers.. A 3 pc set of Chisel shaped objects...1/2", 3/4", 1" widths..was supposed to be $3 each? Couple items for the shop? Masterforce Coping saw, with a hacksaw blade? Some odds & ends... There WAS an half empty tube, tossed it...kept this because it had not been used.. And you all wonder why they call me Bandit? Headhunter, HARO50, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 2 3 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted November 12, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 12, 2024 @lew I felt the same way for a long time. Did 4 years ROTC , commissioned and they gave me Transportation Corp. Had a year delay to get my license and then 3 months TDY at Fort Eustis. They did not need officers as Nam was cycling down so finished my time in ready reserve with no meeting as there was no unit with my MOS with 90 miles. Then I saw that little thing that says " I signed the line and gave the country a blank check on my life . " And i had no control on what orders I received . Finished up the week demonstrating at the Ag Museum Saturday. It was good but a little off from last year, had bad weather coming in Saturday but really did not do anything. Had to do some shopping this morning. Picked up a hitch ball at HF and groceries at WM. Did not leave too much time in afternoon. Put trans fluid in tractor , was less than about a gallon low. Put a new grease alumite in Disc but still not taking grease. Probably eventually have to remove disc and clean it out inside. Hope to get around to laying lines out for posts for the lean to tractor shed tomorrow. Maybe dig a hole or two. HARO50, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Grandpadave52 and 3 others 5 1 Quote
