What's Up!

I can't believe it's almost Fall. I can't believe 5 yrs passed since our youngest daughter enlisted into the Army and now she is back home with us, a veteran and a civilian. She has some good plans ahead, she is going to pursue her dream of working with animals, small and farm, in several weeks, mama, me and our girl are going to jump on an airplane, and head out to Aiken SC and help our daughter plan her move back to that area, where she'll be attending junior college for a semester to knock out some pre-requisites for her veterinary school. Apparently veterinary medicine is pretty big there because of the horse community and race horse culture. 

I'll return back to work in a week ahead of mama and our girl, they'll stay out there to recon North Carolina and into Tenn a little bit to search out a town we'd like to hang our hat in once I retire early next year.

 

I can't believe I am looking at retirement already. I had planned on working a bit longer but I am learning life really is waaaay too short, and if I can cobble together a retirement that keeps me and the missus fed, housed, and able to enjoy the extra things we like to do, then I should in short order. Why not!?

 

So now it's your turn, what's going on in your life your shops, your families, thank you all for being here and participating in this one of a kind community!

Chipped the mortar off the bathroom floor in prep for tile and got the linen cabinet carcasses ready for final sanding.

@John, if you can swing a comfortable retirement - go for it!  Everyone’s definition of “comfortable” is different, but if you can see that, more power to you!

 

As for yours truly & SWMBO, we are having a great trip.  Thoroughly enjoyed  Albuquerque & Santa Fe last week, although there is a lot (it seems) of homeless in the former…

 

This past weekend we made it up the central valley of CA & Yosemite.  I’ve never in my life seen anything those areas!!!  I thought I’d seen farming and on a big scale… boy was I wrong!

Coming back down through the central valley yesterday

 

Whole lot of nothing going on here.

No forest fires, no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no flooding. Just a stretch of 80° weather.

Retired at 62, diagnosed at 65 with heart failure.  Glad I had 3 good years of retirement and not forced to retire at 65 unable to work.

Took the bad battery out of the side by side this weekend.  Went to Interstate for a battery and had one put in the Jeep too.  Six years old so didn't want to chance another winter with it.  Same two batteries six years ago were $100.00 cheaper than today's cost.

It's "Tech Week" for the production next weekend.  People are getting a bit frustrated with the set construction manager, who as a "concept of a plan" for the complicated set.   Several last minute design changes at yesterday's 12 hour move in and assemble work.

 

Had Grandson here this weekend . We watched the Ole Miss game together and worked on the top for his box on lathe. He spent a good amount of time studying. Finished up a slide show of Gallery at Swat. See it HERE

There is something to be said for everyone taking 3 years of shop classes while in high school.

Arrived local hospital ~12:30A today. Was transferred out to larger treatment hospital ~8A. Prepped an in surgery by ~1:30P. Out .  surgery back to room ~5P less a lot of fluid,lots blood clots an two 14 mm bladder stones. Be here probably 2-3 more days. Right now feel better than  I have for days/ weeks. More later. Good, no GREAT Pain meds..can't stay awake

 

I'm glad you're feeling better, especially so soon after an operation!

Speedy recovery my friend!

I made some progress on the table, though not as much as I would have liked.

 

Starting off with dry fitting of the slats.  They key in to splines glued into the long rails, as do the spacers between them.

 

Once I got them all placed, I had about a 7/16" gap.  Not unexpected, and not a bad thing, but tedious to deal with it.

 

 

I was going to need a little wiggle room on these when it comes to glue up anyway.  Those are just folded over pieces of paper out of one of my shop pads, around 0.006" each once folded.  That much on both sides of every slat took up too much slack so I did a 2-1 alternation.

 

 

Then laboriously glued in the spacers with hide glue.  I like hide glue, good for this kind of job.

My shop is now covered with those little bits of paper!

 

 

This evening I got all the oak parts sanded and oiled.  Still have to do all those slats!

Final coat will be shellac over the oil.  Once assembled it will likely get another coat of shellac.

Looks good Just curious, why use so many small pieces instead of dadoing  long side?

What the heck did I miss Gramps! I had no idea you were having these issues! Are they going to remove the stones?
