July 24, 20241 yr Popular Post Making me wish I could find some Ash I could buy within 100 miles of my house now. No one local has any that hasn't been attacked by bugs. So far your project looks great. Love the bead detail on the bottom of the stretchers. 4D
July 25, 20241 yr Author Popular Post There is now a full dry fit of the base of the table.. No...not this one... THIS one...chopped the rest of the Mortises, today...almost chopped the wrong one....what I get for getting in a BIG hurry.. This was to see HOW I will be clamping this up, when the glue-up happens.. Right now, though... Have to stash things off to the side, until the next time in the shop..those 3 "sticks"? Will be how I intend to attach the top to the base... Stay tuned
July 26, 20241 yr Author Popular Post So...Laundry Detail, today...which means...Wir haben zu arbeiten... Needed to make 2 end brackets.. Later, I add to slots, to attach the top to the base with screws...preset a clamp or 2.. Then knock things apart..spread a bit of glue everywhere...Bang parts back together, and set up for the LONG clamps Was easy to set things up on the tablesaw...just not much room.. Mallet did a LOT of "Assisting" parts to where they needed to be.. Trying ( VERY) to get the end brackets into place, with the long clamps getting in the way.. About time to move clothes from the Washer, over to the Dryer...will let this mess sit a day or 3... Stay tuned
July 28, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Clamps have come off, today,,base was centered up on the Top.. To see how big of a curve I could cut... Hmmm, about that big.... Next..needed to dovetail this in place.. Began the day like this.. With the sockets hand chopped...then some glue, and then a screw down through the tail..as the center of the top will be attached to this.. With a washer under the head of the screw...then...drill a few slots, and add screws and washers .. 2 on each end.. And that will do it for today...Tuesday, will be a sanding day...after that Stay tuned..
August 1, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Ok..there will be cussing involved, today...Hauled the table and the tablesaw out where I could work on it a bit better...and set up a router to cut a cove detail.. Fought with the depth settings on the router...and once I could start the dang thing up....I had to not only keep a table from running away, I had to keep kicking the cord out of the way of my feet..somehow got this done... Then wrapped the cord up around the router, and tossed it back onto a shelf... Then, since the table was sitting where I could sand the top smooth.. Got out the ROS and a few sanding discs...80 grit and 220 grit...and sanded the top down...including the Fuzziness left by the router bit.. Witch's Brew: Was a bit on the RED side of things, last time..so I added a few "shots" of Dark Walnut to the mix... Was just going to do the top itself...brushed on... Then a clean (not for long) rag to wipe it all down...let this sit and dry a few hours...while I have a different kind of Brew.. Then..about 4pm...went back to the shop...flipped the table back onto it's top... Sanded everything under the top to 120 grit....then applied the Witch's Brew... And wiped it down...tomorrow's task? Will be to brush on a coat of this...wait until I can grab a leg or 2, flip the table over...and brush a coat onto the top.. That IS the plan, right now...we'll see... Stay tuned..
August 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Bottom areas were varnished, yesterday...allowed to fully dry... Then..I carefully rotated the table over.. Yep, this IS the "Finishing Room "...and... Side details...wavy grain, too... wiped the top clean and smooth,,and brushed on a coat.. First coat...was hard to get a glare-free picture, since there is a very BRIGHT LED Shop light right overhead...try from the other end? That black spot is IN the wood,,,showed up when the stain hit it.. Getting ready to add Coat #2 in a bit....Uncle Arthur did an 0500 WAKE-UP! this morning...
August 2, 20241 yr Author Popular Post And..second coat is dry...all set to move upstairs.. View from the side..and... From the top... will need a bit of help to get this upstairs...not so much the weight...it's them long, skinny legs...plus, I can't reach the door knob to open the basement door...without letting a cat down the steps...we'll see how this goes.. Thanks for looking in!
August 3, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Just got done walking this table up the stairs, and into the Living Room...and slid it behind the Couch...where it belongs... Project has been delivered...2 days late...but it has been delivered, none the less... Just a simple table...
