I've been away for a while.  Working through some health issues with Mrs. Boss for the last several months.

Retirement is a short 8 weeks away.  :)  Hopefully, I can get back some shop time this fall.  Meanwhile, lots of other stuff happening on the home front.

Meet Q'bert.  Our apartment on wheels has been getting a lot of our attention. Q'bert is a 2024 Coachmen Freelander 27QB built on a Chevy 3500 chassis.

Trying to get that ventilation job next door done.

Made up a vent grill assembly yesterday, and got it painted for the north end of the addition using a couple more of those shutters Bruce found "Curb Shopping". ;)

Have to install the screen on the back side today, and get it mounted before the Barn Swallows decide to move in. <_<

Also, may try to get the galvanized hip roof on the Cupola today, Bruce painted it with white "Flex Seal" yesterday. Have to make up a center post brace yet.

Also have to seal the gable ends of the Cupola sealed with roofing cement.

If we manage to get all of that done, we'll be done with that project. Yippie!

Photos later today.

Marie has a CT scan scheduled for today, they told her it would take almost 2 hours start to finish....so I may get anything done today. But  do need to mow the remaining parts of the lawn that I didn't mow last week. Otherwise, I'm trying to get a lumber run in this week, and I'll keep practicing on the lathe.

Fred, I've been missing in some of these discussions, if you are able to disclose, what is Marie's scan for?

7 weeks ago she had a second back surgery. This time it was to place rods on each side of the spine to "stabilize" it and relieve her pain, which actually got worse after last September's surgery. Her recovery was much harder this time, because she has severe scoliosis they had to try and straighten it slightly to get the rods screwed in place. Anyway, she did get much better but was having some phantom pains, so the CT is take a better look at what was done to ensure that everything is where it should be. That said, at this point she is far better off than she was before this last surgery (fingers crossed).

Love that radio shack setup. Especially like the computer monitor on the right!!

The right monitor is displaying WSJT-X and Grid Tracker.  This provides access to various digital radio modes like FT8.  Basically using the radio to modulate a digital signal that is decoded by a listening station.  Works with low power and is especially useful for noisy band conditions.

Gridtracker shows FT8 traffic in real time globally.  I can see my outbound transmissions as a red line.  Stations operating FT8 are shown on the map.

Here are some FT8 contacts from my log.

started to organize the truck and started to pack my bags.

each year, the HS kids at our church go to camp, sun-wed, up in CO, near crested butte (AEI Base Camp to be exact).

last year 9 kids went, had a great time, and afterwards, the pastor mentioned to me (i had sponsored 2 kids last year) that he'd like for more to go this year.

we have 17 signed up, leave next sunday after the service.

I had a pretty good year last year, so was able to sponsor more kids, and then they "drafted" me to also be a chaperone this year, so i get to go along, including providing transportation to 4 kids in my truck (gear goes in the bed, it will be tarped over and secured).

get my passenger assignments yesterday:  4 girls.......

someone asked how i was feeling:  TERRIFIED!!  what do i know about HS girls?  yeah, i was married for just over 20 years, but giggly HS girls.  yikes.

anyway, i've made up 17 goodie bags, one for each kid with some fun munchies:  cookies, trail mix, peanuts, gold fish crackers, granola bars, twizzlers, and a small pack of wet wipes.  my own goodie bag has what i wanted in it.  yum.

so i'll say several prayers for safety for all of us, and try to deliver these young ladies in good shape on time.

no shop work this week.

here's how the communion tables i made look in place:

As having been a chaperon on many high school field trips, you will be in my prayers

we didn't have any kids, so i have very limited experience with such creatures.

loaded some good, old, country music on my iPhone, sorry, if we're going to do music, we're doing my choice:  Cash, Paycheck, Haggard, Nelson, Jennings.  Outlaw Country.

We didn't have any kids either but I "raised" over 500 teenager from 10th to 12th grade. Same kids, all day long, for half a year and then swapped out for another bunch for half a year. They did 3 years like that. I think I new more about them than their biological parents. Many still drop by the house to tell me about their lives.

I used to make them listen to "Doo Wop" and 50/60's rock and roll :D

:ChinScratch: It's later,

A couple of views of the center roof bracing which will attach to a 2x4 cross brace. I used steel siding screws to attach the galvanized roof.

I also drilled holes in the four edges to attach to the Cupola frame.

Thought I took some photos of the shutter vent I made up before we installed it but I guess not.

But here's a view of it after it was installed. It's installed on the North end of the building.

Here's a view of both from the North end. We need to do some work on that gable end siding it looks like.

:ChinScratch:Not too shabby considering almost all of the materials used came from Bruce's "Curb Shopping" adventures.

Had an enjoyable visit with wife's niece and her husband. We calculated its been 8 years since I last saw them last in person. Mrs. twin sister and her older sister joined us also. Sunday after church, lunch out, a couple of errands, Mrs. had me working on her projects.

Out early (for me) today. Trip to Boilertown to Menards and a quick stop at Harbor Freight (go H-F:P). No donuts were harmed during this trip. Stopped by daughter/ SIL's to drop off a few items, took grandsons out for ice cream, back to their place, then a couple more errands, then home.

Remainder of the week, some weedeating in store, continue working on my outside PHD's and maybe start some new outside projects to half-completion. Plenty to choose from. Yard will need mowed by the end of the week if not before, but storms moving in again just in time for the 4th.

Only projects with wood will be cutting out wild mulberry growth, picking up sticks and limbs from Saturdays storms and on-going disposal of the old yard play set.

PSA#2. Bagels ARE NOT diet, low cal, donuts.

As for more time in the shop after retirement... But at least you can set your own schedule they said....:throbbinghead:

First, blessings to you DAB for the sponsorship and accepting the opportunity to lead young folks in a positive manner. As for transporting four teenage girls, you might pack your shooting hearing protection to drown out the noise;). You really don't need to say anything as if you'll get the opportunity anyway. Just listen...or not... Anyways, prayers to you for safe travels, and a great camp experience.
