Featured Video There is much controversy surrounding the Radial Arm Saw, some of the negative beliefs are founded which has led to the RAS to be known as the bad guy in the workshop. I've delved into the online rabbit hole of Radial Arm Saw use, and have explored commentary and How To's and I came away with a new fresh outlook on the RAS for the home shop. Many of us own one, and many of us grew up watching our dad, uncle, grandpa use one and possibly perform some crazy tasks on those machines. Here is a good video I feel that demonstrates safe and proper use of the RAS for ripping purposes. You can probably skip to around the 3:30 minute mark to get to the meat of the video, the first part of it has some thoughtful history and setup philosophy for the video. I'd like to thank @User74 for bringing this subject up in his own topic at My Saw Now. Enjoy!
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Weekend was busy with most of Saturday taken up with yard work. Spent a lot more time than expected cutting some quarter round trim for daughter's pantry. One day I just drew a blank on how to angle the miter saw for those cuts and walked away from it. The next day it all clicked and I got a bunch of small pieces and parts cut out. Began applying finish to them yesterday and should complete this today. Not sure when we will trek back to the city to install. Balance of the week, I have a wind chime to finish and a couple to clean up and hang. And then plans, make some plans. I want to build a small side board for a spot in the kitchen that seems to be a junk magnet plans are needed. We are putting plans together for a train trip to the west coast. I believe we have the route plotted out, now it's putting the dates together, seeing if any of the young one's want to meet up with us along the way, seeing what's available at a reasonable cost at the various stops we will make and so forth. But getting the route drawn out was a huge first step for us.
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post I did get to spend some time practicing with a skew chisel on the lathe over the weekend....but many more hours of practice is needed. Yesterday was nice enough to do some spring time chores outside. Taking our little dog to the vet this morning, then yard stuff later including mowing. Rest of the week looks rainy so I'll get some more lathe practice in somewhere in there.
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Survived grandsons 10th birthday party. Did get a bit of garage reorganizing accomplished as well as some other spring related chores. Got one mower serviced and ready to go as well as some string trimming accomplished. Must have overdone it as my back was pretty painful yesterday. It seems a little better this morning. Gonna' try to get some mowing accomplished next couple of days before rain sets it again. Haircut trip to Boilertown Wednesday followed by errands to Menards, Rural King and perhaps a couple other stops. Edited April 15, 20242 yr by Grandpadave52
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Mowing. Maybe next week if I get all of the downed sticks, branches, and trees cleaned up so I can, still plenty wet here even after a couple of nice days. More rain coming tomorrow into Wednesday so I'm not sure if that's going to happen. Nice day again today, so after thinking about it being a Monday, I flipped my two headed coin and called tails for going about doing it today.
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Demo a plastic storage shed. Bust up concrete slab. Install pavers for trash can area. sounds like work.
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post I had to work all weekend. I work at a plant that manufacturers a processed clay material for the use in the petroleum business for oil refining. I work a 7 day rotation switching to a different shift each rotation. We work anywhere from 8, 12 to 16 hour shifts. It's really fun you should try it. I guess everyone has to do something to pay the bills. Lol
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Got to sanding out second turn a few bowls Saturday. Love the look of the elm this came from and then there is the box elder. Sunday my son had to go to Sam’s and then we made a trip down to the ranch for a little target practice. After that we walked the land and in the far back corner there was a tree down. It was one side of a giant over 24 inch diameter Willow Oak. Had to look that one up. Looks like wood good for outdoor furniture and Jason wants a picnic table. We will have to see about that. At the doctors office now for check up.

April 15, 20242 yr Don't make enough to need to file...no W2s , either. Last time I tried to file...$0.26 refund? why bother. Sunday was a busy day in the shop, until Brain Pharts, and toe cramps put an end to it... Was on the computer late last night...and, about 0100 hrs, tom cat decided to stroll across the computer desk...and knocked over the glass of Tonic & Gin...right onto the "Old" keyboard.....so...this morning, I am getting used to a NEW Keyboard and Mouse set up.. Yep...Monday strikes again..

Yeah, the one thing that I guess you could say that's good about my schedule is that I do get time and a half after 8. It does compound to double and double and a half after 40. I usually hit 40 on the 4th day or 5th day. The government loves me. Lol. The money is good but no work-life balance. I have about 13 more before I can retire. I'm not going to proofread this post cause it sounds too depressing. Lol
April 15, 20242 yr Popular Post pavers placed where trash cans sit, no more mud. plastic shed taken apart and pieces loaded in truck. dump is open tomorrow, will take it there then. no space for concrete pad demo, so do that another day. good lunch afterwards, she was thrilled, good chat. i'm full and tired.

Lol Used to be time and a half for over eight hours, time and a half for over forty. double time for Sundays, and triple time for holidays. I used to make more in one week than I get for a months pension. I used to think I was going to meet myself like in this old DD commercial.
