March 8, 20242 yr Popular Post I got side tracked making a new mailbox post for a larger mail box. A test tenon Fixed it with some polyurethane glue as the wood was pretty wet... I split it out while fitting the tenon to the mortise using a crow bar to jack it out... I hope to get it planted Sunday but I'm feeling kinda poorly right now... it's been raining so digging should be easy. JT
March 8, 20242 yr Author Popular Post I used a trick I saw on Samson Boat Co Tally Ho videos to cut the mortises straight. I clamped a square block up to my line and used that to guide back side of the chisel. It was my first time cutting a mortise and tenon joint and the guide block just made it so easy. I also used a block cut on a 45° to guide the chisel on the tapered part of the mortise... I should have taken photos of that. JT
March 8, 20242 yr Popular Post Nice work JT. Excellent job on your M&T's. I need to redo mine. Cedar post finally gave out in the ground.

March 9, 20242 yr I don't bother making them fancy, lost 3 in one winter season alone. Nothing like trying to replace one in frozen ground.

If I lived where you do my second mailbox post would be a 18" sonotube filled with rebar and concrete... JT

JT A six-inch pipe filled with concrete buried four feet into the ground is there now. The plow drivers have only hit it once since then, and they had to drag the wing plow out of the ditch after doing so.
