January 16, 20242 yr Popular Post grrrr.....so i'm working on this desk for a friend, a little refresh, and she wanted new, old looking pulls, 3 total. center to center is 2-3/4", an odd distance, but available. i search hi and low, finally find some she likes, buy the set of 4. $29. they arrive. they look like they were made in a back alley in Pakistan. fairly rough, but they'll work. until i go to try one out. screws too short. ok, i can buy longer screws. hmmm....i have a supply of knob/pull screws from other projects that came with multiple screws, check that supply. oh. everyone else in the world uses 8-32 screws for knobs and pulls. not this gang. get out my tap and die set, measure the screws supplied. 10-24. what? c'mon man.... and the female part needed some chasing with my tap, so the screws will actually thread in. so tomorrow i'll be off to HD after Bible study to find at least 6, 8 would be better, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" long, 10-24 screws with pan heads. and that's why it's a good idea to have a tap and die set for woodworking.

January 17, 20242 yr Popular Post they only had 1-1/2" long screws, and after some trial and error, found that i had to cut them down to about 1-1/16" long. needed 6, they came in packages of 5.....really? c'mon man.... cut the screws shorter with a hack saw, chased the threads with the matching die, and got everyone fit up.
