December 12, 20232 yr Popular Post Monday. Title arrived for the pickup I bought. Just in time as I was looking up the phone number of the dealership I bought it from, to call and ask about it, when the mailman rang the bell with something for me to sign for. Today I visit the county clerk's office to get a tag and pay the sales tax and registration fee. Breakfast first, maybe. 4D

December 12, 20232 yr Popular Post Taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society. Taxes? We don’t pay taxes, little people pay taxes.

Since the used truck and title came from another state the county had to make sure the odometer matched the documentation, and the vin numbers matched. No inspections required for new vehicles no matter where you buy them from. The folks who work at the county clerk's office were all pleasant, helpful, and professional. Of course it was just after they opened for the day. Since electric cars have now started showing up in my county, they have been asking if the vehicle being registered runs on gas. Three years ago I registered my 2020 Bolt EV and remember they were skeptical about in only running on electricity. Apparently hybrid vehicles had been through before, including a Chevy Volt or two but my Bolt was the first Chevy made EV they ever saw. Tesla they knew about. They wanted to be sure, because it turns out pure electric vehicles pay a higher registration fee than any car that burns gas. 4D

Likely so. Although a flat fee no matter how many miles you drive, compared to a gas tax which relates to miles driven using gas on the road, could be a little unfair. I did have a nice surprise waiting on my front porch when I got home. A K-State Wildcat logo insert for the 2" trailer hitch socket. Gotta show some local team support when I'm out and about.
December 13, 20232 yr Popular Post I read that a good number of electric vehicles are still on the road...awaiting a charge.

All electric vehicles on the road are awaiting their next charge up to continue their journey. Software in many shows where they can find a charger to use. Same is true for all gas powered vehicles. They look forward to their next refill to continue their journey. My Bolt EV sits patiently in my garage waiting for it's next trip around town. When the battery gets down to 20% full I plug it so it can slowly sip 110v to charge back up to 80% or so. Never taken a long cross country trip in it. Just enjoyed not having to buy gas for the last few years when prices spiked.

I looked into this for Georgia last year when we were car shopping. Like most (all?) states now, GA charges a pretty steep annual fee on electric vehicles for the privilege of driving on roads maintained by the gas tax. Our regular hybrid just has the normal tag fee. The plug-in hybrids, though, depends upon which license plate you want to buy for it! A regular tag gets you regular tag fee but if you want to opt for the specialty EV tag you gots to pay the piper... afaik, the only "benefit" to purchasing the specialty tag would be the ability to use the HOV lane while driving alone through Atlanta. That, and bragging rights I suppose Since our gas tax has been waived for a good portion of 2023, I've not heard of any rebates for those folks with EV's. Also, I don't know what part of the state the Guv'nor drives on... but our roads could sure use some resurfacing around here...

When a battery recall came out because a small number of Bolts had caught on fire, a small percentage of owners went through a tedious buy-back deal with GM to get rid of their Bolts. I suspect a returned Bolt with an unknown potential for catching on fire would just be scrapped, thus what may be perfectly good Bolts sit in boneyards. Mine got a software update that limits the charge percentage and watches the battery carefully. After a defined number of miles and charges it hasn't seen any flaw it will start allowing a 100% charge again. Should it detect any flaw in the battery it will inform me and I'll end up with a new battery that has a fresh 8 year warranty. I got a $1400 e-card for my patience.
