Honey dipper lids, work in progress

Featured Replies

Lady at the honey farm just ordered 25 dipper lids, said the last two festivals have wiped her out on them. I've posted pictures of the finished dippers many times but I thought I would do a quick video or two making the lids. I did do video on you tube on making one of these but amazingly that video is 7 years old and my process has changed dramatically. The lids are twice turned so I did a video for each step. The videos aren't real long which is a good thing.

Most interesting . That bit must have been expensive or did you get it from Ali Express? What size? Also how are the split haws attached to the chuck? Looks like a very novel solution to the problem.

Cool. Thanks for the videos. Awesome you have a local, high demand market outlet.

Hi Gerald

The large bit is 2 7/8" Roman Carbide forstner bit from amazon.

The split jaws, a secret I've harbored for a long time, LOL. Many people don't realize but the larger Nova jaws are actually designed to affix a piece of wood to them. In my mind it was always a "why"? If you attach a piece of wood you can't remove or install the jaws. What good does attaching a piece of wood do? Then, about the time Easy Wood Tools introduced their chuck with the snap in jaws, Nova introduced their version. At the time I was using a home made expansive chuck to do my lids. I knew immediately, for me, it was a game changer. Unfortunately, the Nova design was so poor they eventually discontinued marketing their version but not before I purchased one of the chucks and several sets of adapters and jaws. It's ideal for making these lids and I have them set up for each size I make. The really nice part is, it puts no stress on the short grain at all. Anyone who has ever used a jamb chuck knows why.

Pretty slick Steve.  You've got those lids down pat.

Thanks for the info. Always wondered about those holes. Kinda like finding holes on the lathe and wondering why is that there? There is at least one hole on my PM I still don't know what its purpose is.
