September 7, 20232 yr Popular Post Maybe your old enough to remember your grandparents/great grandparents crank up "Gramophone" with the big horn phonograph or maybe they had the later "Victrola" with the internal horn built into the cabinet or if they had electricity they may have had an "Orthophonic Victrola" AKA as "Electrola" with the Electrola soundbox pickup introduced in 1925. I've been wanting to build a rolling cabinet for my Windows 11 Pro build computer/monitor/usb turntable and after talking a few times with my neighbor "Bruce" he mentioned why not build a "Victrola" style case. We're both fans of the "Golden Oak" era so I kind of liked the idea. The clincher came when Bruce pulled out an old store display of none other than the "Nipper" that stands about 2.5 ft. tall. (I'm still trying to talk him out of that!) That and the fact that I have access to Bruce's salvage furniture pieces he's collected over the years which included this lid and other items. The case will fit on the Larkin desk I'm rebuilding/refinishing which has castors. Guess I'd have to say I heard "His Masters Voice" and the build is on. Here's some of those "Salvage" and "Curb Shopping" items. I've been getting a little done here and there working around the weather and vehicle problems but will have to take some photos later to show what I've got done later when I can. SWMBO is done with car, so I better go change that window regulator so the window will stay up.
September 7, 20232 yr I'm here start to finish. Here's hoping Nipper escapes through the steam tunnels to guard the retro Victrola.

If you can make sense of them here's my written down parts of "The Plan" The rest is rolling around in my mind in 3D.
September 8, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Started with one of these halves of an Oak table top. Of course, one of the problems of using salvage lumber is that you have to strip it so you can use it for a project but the price is right. From the half I started with I cut out the bottom for the case. The table top half had a slight bow to it but we have ways of working around that and at the same time add feet and a cord chase. I still need to cut the cord access hole. The 20" table slides required a bit of modification to serve my purpose. They're designed for one side mounting, and I need to mount to them from both sides. Here's a photo before modification. I squared them up on the table saw so I could add a couple of cleats for two sided mounting. Here they are after adding the cleats. I'll have to trim them to size after getting the monitor box assembled. And here's the pile of parts that will make up the monitor sliding box. The 1/2" Oak stock came from a pair of salvaged dresser drawers. I'm even using the Oak veneered plywood from the drawer bottom for the back of the monitor box. Now I'm waiting on the glue to set so I can glue some more pieces together.

They're actually table slides for adding leaves to an old round table that the veneer didn't survive getting wet during one of Bruce's "Curb Shopping" expeditions. I didn't think drawer slides would work to well sideways from their normal position.
September 9, 20232 yr Love your workbench. I have one just like it. Just have to have cleared by supper time.

I kept thinking I needed a bigger work area than the tailgate of the truck and just kept walking past it every time I walked back and forth from next door before I realized there's my bigger work area.
September 9, 20232 yr Popular Post Great start to an interesting project Larry. Or perhaps since we are seeing this two weeks after the fact... maybe you are done?

Problem is am I two weeks in the past or two weeks in the future? Made a little progress this morning. I needed to determine the final cut size for the table slides so I did a test fit of the monitor box parts. The board above the opening is for clamping purposes only. There will be a door mounted on that end for access to the monitor controls. Here's the cut to size table slides. I have a few holes to drill before I can do the glue up.

I needed some "FUN" time. Better yet, Sunshine without the high humidity and dewpoint. Now I have to figure out when/where I'm going to squeeze in time to do "Bruce's" ignition switch replacement and replacing the neutral safety/range selector switch on the Pilot. (Neither of those are going to be fun.)
