August Box Making?

Have some "left over" Pine....not all that much...

Figured I could cobble something up?   They have a few bad spots to get rid of..

And..

Maybe cut the offending section out with the Mitersaw?

Note the reflection on the saw plate?  Shows I am cutting almost a perfect 90 degrees...depth stop were a hair too high, though..

Kind of rough right at the end...Didn't take all that long to do..

About 10 full strokes usually was enough...Results?

That pine panel will be the bottom of the box...4 sides?

Cut to match that panel...beside these parts..

Should be enough for a panel for the lid, and a collar?  Things look a bit too thick...at 3/4"?

We have ways..

Set up the tablesaw for resaw work...

Fence was reset, as it WAS set up to resaw 1/2" thick....like these..

That's a bit better?   Along with the lid parts..

3 pc panel...almost ready to be glued up....there was ONE kickback, today..

Yep...

2 ends, and will cut the rest out of that long strip...Glue up?  Already?

Vise works as a 3rd hand...kind of skimpy on clamps, today...will cut to final size and for square, tomorrow...

Corners for the box will be through Dovetails...Bottom panel will sit in a groove,   same as the lid's panel...

Mitersaw got used, again..

.

Glued up panel is out of the clamps, cleaned up, and flattened...one end needed trimmed for square

Just a tad...set this aside, for now.   Needed to get a few tools out of the Tool Cabinet, next...

Dovetail saw, bevel gauge, Marking gauge, Combo Square.   Marking knife was already in the tool well, had to sharpen the pencil..

Square to let the pencil darken the lines..

Bevel gauge next..

and..

A combo square to carry the lines to the baseline, then the saw gets to work...

Then a chisel to chop out the waste.  Use these pins to trace out the tails...bandsaw the waste from those...Dry fit?

Then repeat for the next...

Only 2 more to do..

Then try a dry fit, with clamps..

 

But, no glue was involved..yet.

 

Need to plough a groove to hold the bottom panel....rebate all 4 edges of that panel..fit it and the sides together...THEN see about a glue up...

Just an observation, it looks like the lower left corner of some of your images are a little "foggy". Maybe dust?

I as just thinking that a box to hold all the other boxes would be nice to see him make.

Many years back I made a set of small wood blocks, of many different sizes, for my young nephew.  When done with all the blocks I realized I needed to make a box for the blocks.

That's a project I would have bet I wouldn't remember until today.

Camera seems to have focus issues....ever since it fell onto the floor...am trying to get things to focus better...losing too many pictures to being out of focus...

I spent most of Aug making boxes for a customer made of pallets

Beat the blocks off, and use a Air Hammer to drive the first 27 of 135 nails in each pallet, (6 pallets used)

All the pieces cut

Picked up a helper today

The boxes are for a local brewer. It's a 12 larger bottle case and yes I am taking my fee in beer

Great boxes, great to see you bringing the young one's into the shop with you... but, are you going to also pay your subcontracted helper in beer?!?

TEST, TEST...

Seems IF I zoom in just a tad..the Focus becomes clearer...have to do this with every time the camera is turned on..

Monday evening ( yeah, I know..Mondays)

Several things going on here...fine tune the rebated panel into the grooves.  The panel is to fit flush with the bottom of the sides.   I also cut a spacer to prevent the sides from bowing in during glue up...flip over add the rest of the clamps

Plane doing a "Photo Bomb"?   Silver rod is the handle of the brush I used to spread the glue..

Will let this sit over Monday night..

Gaps are to allow for any expansion due to Humidity..this IS Ohio, remember...

Clamps came off this morning..time to clean it up..

Any too tall pins were sanded down first,,the a plane took over..

Seems a high spot over on the right, is causing a gap on the left..we have ways

All 4 sides done...time to level the bottom of the box...and flatten the panel..

Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11..earning it's keep...then flip over..

And level the top edges, so the lid will sit down without any gaps...

So..NEXT! 

Need to cobble this into a lid of some sort...

Camera WAS on the charger this morning....got back from errands, decided to try and set up the tablesaw to plough a few grooves and other tasks....had to leave the camera upstairs..

 

Grooves were milled...then the ends were mitered...

Made a mess of things....

Needed a way to fine tune the miters..so

We have ways...

 Tablesaw was reset to 15 degrees of tilt...panel was run through, cutting a beveled edge on all 4 edges...then reset again,,

Cutting a rebate around the inside of the panel...took a wee bit of fine tune work, until the panel would fit all the way into the grooves...Then glue , a brush, and 6 clamps took over..

used a square to check how square the corners are..

Looks good to me..

 

Fine tuning the bevel took a couple planes..

End bevels got the block plane, long side bevels got the Stanley No. 4-1/2c...

New bottle of glue....and a full bag of NEW Acid Brushes from Harbor Freight...between the glue and the brushes = $9.09 out the door..

Letting this mess sit overnight..will flip over in the morning...

Getting there...was looking for high spots..

Trying for a gap-free fit...getting there...was a busy day with the planes...again...

Hardware has been installed...a coat of Witch's Brew brushed on and wiped down...and 2 coats of Amber Shellac (2 pound cut)

So...Post as a Project?

Around in back...all screws are "clocked the same way "X"...Open the lid?

All cleaned up, and oiled,,ready to make 3/8" wide dados....as for that thing on the lid?

BANDIT'S   DUNGEON    WOODSHOP...

Mirror image...all out of Brass...

There are a bunch of "slits" just below the handle, that let out excess HEAT...and will roast the side of your hand....takes about 20 minutes to heat up enough to burn the brand..

While waiting,,I cleaned up a second fancy plane...

Ward's Master Quality (Stanley made) No. 78...it too has it's own case..

Had to remove a bit of rust, here and there...then oiled the plane back up...

 

Both boxes are now stowed away, beside the Plane Til...
